Each group has its own leader, who is the personification and, in some way, a collective image of all the inhabitants of his group. However, there is also a leader (Master) of the entire House - the Blind Man. He has power over all the packs, and absolutely all the children, including the girls, listen to his words. There are three floors in the House. They contain classrooms and living rooms, rest rooms, etc. The Graveyard - a hospital wing - is attached to the House. He is old and closer in age to the wastelands - the burial places of his peers. It is lonely - the other houses avoid it - and does not look like a tooth, because it does not stretch upwards. It has three floors, the facade looks out onto the highway, it also has a yard - a long rectangle surrounded by a net. Once it was white. Now it is gray in front and yellow on the inside, the yard side. It bristles with antennas and wires, crumbles with chalk and cries with cracks. Garages and extensions, garbage bins and dog kennels are pressed against it. All this is from the yard. The facade is bare and gloomy, as it should be. The house is located on the outskirts of the city, among new buildings. This place is called "Combs" because of the white houses lined up in rows, like the teeth of a comb. Next to the high-rise buildings are vacant lots - future teeth of combs. It is between the destroyed and empty peers and the new high-rises that the House is located. The House (Grey House) - the place where all the main events of the book take place. In essence, it is a boarding school for children, where they live and study. In fact, for the children themselves, it means much more than a temporary place of residence.

The Coffee Pot is one of the classrooms that the residents of the House have converted into a place where you can have a snack, drink tea or coffee, hold a meeting of card players, for example, or those who like to play something else. They also serve various cocktails there, mixed from God knows what, one of which is the Moon Road. It was this that the Smoker was not allowed to try during his first visit to the Coffee Pot, and it was this that the Lord drank, after which not very pleasant events for the entire fourth happened.

The Inside Out is the mystical component of the House. It is an area that not everyone can enter. Something astral, and at the same time felt physically. It has its own laws, time flows differently here, according to a pattern known only to it. People change on the Inside Out. In the House it is a Forest, endless and accessible only at night. Not everyone can visit it, some - not of their own free will. Pupils are divided according to this principle into Walkers and Jumpers. On the Inside Out there are no diseases, wheelchairs and crutches, and the true essence of a person is exposed. A person who has gone there entirely, and not only with his consciousness, will continue to feel everything physically, and if he dies, he will die in the House.

The Upside Down, for almost every person who gets there, begins with an empty, broken highway and a gas station with a diner in the distance. At least that's what those who got there say. Few can go to the Upside Down entirely, but the Blind One can, and he can also transfer someone else with him, but only for the sake of the Sphinx is he willing to pay the high price that the House asks for such a service. But he made an exception, transferring the Godmother, who had to be disposed of so that no one would find her. All transformations, flights, and other things happen only in it or on its border (when part of the person is still there and he has not returned completely, but they are minimal, unlike what happens on the Upside Down).

At the beginning of the story, the director is Shark. At first glance, it may seem that he is just an "inconspicuous guy" who is not connected with the events taking place in the House. But after talking to him, the Smoker realizes that Shark got his nickname for a reason.

Educators
The children's living and studying are supervised by educators. There is one teacher for each group, but Ralph is assigned to two groups at once. He is the only one who tries to imbue himself with the philosophy of the residents of the House.

The main narrative is directed specifically at the children who live in the House. The pupils are divided into groups, how the distribution takes place is unknown. Each group belongs to a certain room of the House. Moreover, by the furnishings of the housing it is easy to understand which pack lives there.

Pheasants are the first group. Shark's favorites. Obsessed with cleanliness and order, imposing their ideas on any accessible mind. Although they are the director's favorite group, they have no authority among other flocks. They are especially despised by logs.
Rats are the second group. Noisy and bright, in the truest sense of the word. Differs from the others by their disregard for cleanliness, aggressiveness and informal clothing. The leader is Red.
Birds are the third group. They are in eternal mourning after the death of the Shadow. They are distinguished by a depressive state, as well as an incomprehensible love for indoor plants. The leader is the Vulture.
The Fourth is the fourth group. The only one that does not have an animal name. The small composition of the group is compensated by the names of its participants. Almost all of them are respected people in the House. It is in the Fourth that the leader of the entire House lives - the Blind One.
Dogs are the sixth group. They dress as brightly as Rats, but with a greater sense of style. Their room is never quiet. The leader is Pompey, later - Black.
