Irene, former Inquisitor of Iberia and apprentice to Supreme Inquisitor Dario. She is well versed in the history, laws, and geography of Iberia. After the Stultifer Navis incident, she left her post as Inquisitor and, on the personal recommendation of Kal'cit, signed on with Rhodes Island as the Inquisition's Messenger to prepare for future maritime threats.

Archive File #1

A former member of the Iberian Inquisition and apprentice to Supreme Inquisitor Dario, well versed in the laws and writings of Iberia, as well as an excellent wielder of the rapier. If your first meeting in Iberia had occurred under more ordinary circumstances, she would, with her head held proudly high, have introduced herself as just that.

However, since arriving on the island of Rhodes, Irene has never once brought up the subject of her past status. It would be more accurate to say that she had come to terms with her change of identity very quickly.

She registered as a Rhodes Island operative without going through all the steps that usually accompany the process. In her spare time, Irene is actively socializing with other operatives and learning new tactics that she has yet to practice. As for following the rules, she is much stricter than most of our employees. By the way, she spends almost all of her free time in the library. Sometimes she reflects that it reminds her of when she was just beginning her career as an Inquisitor. And deservedly so: all her efforts soon bore fruit. Not to mention the knowledge gained, the improvements in combat skills, and the results of her general physical tests, the results alone were more than enough to make her instructors and other operatives take a fresh look at her.

All of Irene's actions are dictated by her beliefs: “It's not my personality that defines who I am. My actions do.”

Only after some time did many operatives finally realize that although Irene may seem too serious and taciturn, she never refuses the friendship of others. She offers her help without fail to those who ask for it.

of the Inquisition, is in a sense a symbol of the Inquisition itself. According to several Aegir operatives, over time, it has become quite common to see an Aegir with a sword and lantern in Iberia. "Aegirs bring evil and trouble." Many people in Iberia had that impression, and Irene was no exception. But after a series of events unfolded right before her eyes, she began to see the Aegirs differently. Although the issue of the treatment of Aegirs in Iberia is on par with the Infected, Ayrin at least tries to fix this strange relationship by being friendly to all the Aegirs of Rhodes Island. "Until now, the Inquisition has been a vital part of Iberia's defensive strength. There is no greater burden than the responsibility the Inquisitors bear when passing judgment. For even the slightest mistake can lead to consequences so dire that no one can take responsibility for them. This is why, in most cases, the Inquisitors' top priority is to prevent the worst possible outcome... but that does not excuse the sometimes trivial decisions of the Inquisition. The judgment of the Inquisitors must answer to every person in the land of Iberia."-Brief excerpt from Ms. Irene's operation report on the Stultifer Navis incident.

“After we returned from Sal Viento back to headquarters, my maestro took me to the underground lairs of the Inquisition. I had heard earlier that beneath the halls of the Inquisition was a prison where the most dangerous criminals were held. I knew nothing about it; I was forbidden even to ask. But after our return from Sal Viento, he took me there himself.”

“We walked through the dark corridors of the Inquisition, down a spiral staircase and through many locked doors, until there was no trace left of the light and sounds of the outside world. It was only thanks to the teacher's lantern that I could see anything at all.”

“There was a Seaborn locked in there. It was the first time I'd ever heard of them.”

“What kind of Moreborn was it? Was it different from the ones you met later on?”

“I don't know, maybe it's because it was the first time I saw them in the flesh, but that Morerborn was quite different... I couldn't understand the structure of his body... or perhaps there was no such thing for him at all. He had all the inherent organs known to us living beings, but nothing more, there was no logical connection between them at all.”

“He was locked in a large steel cage, and there were many chains running through his entire body. But that didn't make sense, because more and more muscles were growing out of the wounds, right on top of the chains. It was as if the chains had become his new skeleton. When I saw him, the muscles were still growing without stopping.”

“I had never seen such a strong creature before. It had all those restraints on it, but it looked like it could tear them off in an instant and lunge at me... but it didn't. It just sat there quietly, as if it didn't realize it was locked up.”

“My maestro got behind me and told me to talk to the creature.”

“Talk? Do you think it could understand our language?”

“But it could... or at least it seemed so to me. I couldn't see its face, much less its eyes, but it seemed to me that it knew my Maestro, and knew that this was the first time we had met. When I took a step forward, it responded. It didn't make a sound, just a slight twitching of its body. It was like some other kind of language.”

......

“Just being in the same room with it, I felt like my consciousness was about to collapse. Everything I could understand was just being sucked out of my body. But my maestro encouraged me to talk to it, to ask questions, but still... In the end, all I could ask was “Who are you?”

“It definitely heard my words. After a few twitches, it turned to face me and stretched its body as wide as it could, as if introducing itself...”

“I could see it twitching - it wasn't struggling, just wriggling and twisting around. Just looking at it, what it was trying to express seemed to go straight through my mind.”

“It told me it wanted to leave.”

......

“My Maestro told me that this is the path all students must take to become a Grand Inquisitor - to face the truth.”

“This is what the Inquisition has been hiding all this time - that the greatest threat to Iberia imaginable, the threat written about in our scriptures, the most vile and pitiful creatures... are perhaps another kind of civilization.”

“Toward the end, I want to ask you one more thing. After witnessing all this, has your attitude towards them changed?”

“No, I still perceive them as our worst enemies.”

A natural disaster that struck Irene's hometown when she was just a child played a cruel joke on her and took on a sacrificial meaning for her in a religious sense. As a result, she lost all of her family members and her quiet life. All she has left afterward is the scripture that protected her from the collapsing roof and Dario who rescued her from the rubble. It's not hard to imagine how important her faith in the scripture and Dario are to her after such unfortunate events.

However, Irene never mentioned her regret at suddenly saying goodbye to her teacher. This noble warrior was more important to her than anything else in this world. Perhaps he was even more than just a teacher and father to her. Though more often than not, he was a distant shadow standing before her rather than a teacher standing beside her. Irene often says that she still has a long way to go before she can reach the level of her maestro. But we have every reason to believe that on that day, aboard the golden ship and beneath the great lighthouse, the flame it spawned was no less radiant.

Henceforth, aboard Rhodes Island, Irene is no longer a member of the Inquisition who simply defends her nation. Instead, she had become a warrior representing the will of Iberia. A warrior that, along with Rhodes Island and the Aegirs, confronts a threat that endangers all of Terra. The burden that Irene carries is unfathomable to most people. When people look at her, more often than not they see only a slender girl, tirelessly studying in the library and study room, and occasionally standing on the deck looking south.

From Sal Viento to Gran Faro and then to Rhodes Island, Irene very quickly embraced the change in her personality and her inner growth. The familiar figure that once stood before her is now gone, and from now on Irene sees the entire landscape of her upcoming journey. Even if there is an endless and stormy night ahead of her, Ayrin will keep moving forward, stopping at nothing. Perhaps one day she will realize that it wasn't the writing that brought her to this path. Perhaps it wasn't even Dario. No matter how winding their road may be, those with true virtue and love for others will always find themselves on the righteous path.

Prompt

Do other Iberian operatives get nervous at the sight of me? To fear the Inquisition is to fear the law. Isn't that natural? Unless... Some of our Aegirs have their own reasons for avoiding me. I'll make that clear in a moment. I can't promise that we won't become enemies in the future.
