Summary
Mikhailo Aleksandr Milkovich, known as Mickey, is the often serious and violent older brother of Mandy Milkovich and the son of Terry Milkovich and Laura Milkovich. He is known as one of the most aggressive bullies in the neighborhood; he has stolen several items from stores, was sent to reform school at a young age, and was raised surrounded by large amounts of weapons in his home. He was first introduced on the show as a bully who terrorized Ian because Mandy accused him of assaulting her.
Personality
Mickey is a complex character, quickly displaying many different facets of his personality throughout the 6 seasons of his appearance. He is violent, but never without reason, even if those justifications vary from acceptable to tenuous. He generally appears to engage in physical violence. He appears to be selfish. He initially refuses to engage in anything deeper than a friendship with benefits with Ian, but shows surprising tenderness for the boy. He has dropped out of high school and has admitted that he is "screwed for life." Despite announcing to everyone at the end of season 4, "I'm fucking gay, big ol' mo," he has multiple heterosexual encounters throughout the series, even after coming out. This shows his insecurities about his sexuality and the macho image he puts on to hide it. His behavior is similarly erratic. He is quite self-aware. However, he displays a severe inability to express himself. In Season 10, Ian states that "Mickey's emotional IQ is lower than Carl's actual IQ." His contradictions can be attributed to his upbringing: Mickey has been raised with expectations of the Milkovich family's violent nature. He genuinely cares for his family, being close with his sister Mandy Milkovich and jumping to her defense, when she is threatened. After his relationship with Ian was revealed to her, they seemed closer with regards to him. While he initially did not care for his presumed son Yevgeny Milkovich, he grew to care for him once he accepted his sexuality and took an active part in his life and became concerned when he was abruptly taken away by Ian. Mickey also expressed joy at seeing his son again while he was incarcerated.
Personality
As the seasons progress, Mickey progressively shows his concern for Ian. It's obvious that Mickey is starting to develop feelings for Ian, but he tries not to and fails. It's worth mentioning that his concern for Ian somewhat extends to the Gallagher family as a whole. A prime example of his concern for the Gallagher family is when Mickey sought out Ian and told him it was okay if he never wanted to hang out with him, Mickey, again that was okay, but told Ian he needed to call his family and informed him of the chaos that had occurred in his absence. Mickey has run-ins with the Gallagher family, in somewhat wholesome but mostly humorous ways. He talks to Carl about drug dealing, and Frank and Mickey talk about guns in one scene. The most iconic example is when Debbie and Mickey team up to get revenge on Sammi for ratting out Ian, resulting in a dramatic and hilarious scene. Before Ian left Mickey in the Season 5 finale, he asked why Mickey cared about his situation, otherwise known as bipolar disorder. Mickey replies that it's because "I love you" when Ian asks what that means. Mickey tells Ian "It means we care for each other." This shows that Mickey's character has emotionally matured enough to feel more comfortable expressing himself. In Season 7, Mickey went to Great Links to meet with Ian after escaping from prison and offered him a chance to go with him to Mexico. However, Ian chickens out at the last moment before Mickey crosses the border into Mexico. Ian expresses, "This isn't me anymore," and though Mickey struggles to accept it at first and tries to encourage Ian to come with him, he crosses the border alone. Before they part ways, Ian finally says "I love you," making it the first time he's said it out loud on-screen.
Personality
Mickey is so distraught that he doesn't seem to hear him, begging him to "get in the damn car." Ian gives Mickey the contents of his savings account, which he emptied for them the day before, and they kiss one last time before Mickey drives off and Ian watches him cross the border and then head back to Chicago. Before crossing into Mexico, Mickey casually tells Ian to "fuck off Gallagher," the Milkovich version of a friendly farewell. Despite their relationship seemingly over, Ian and Mickey are better people for having met. In Mickey's case, Ian helped free Mickey's personality from the shackles of Milkovich's standards and allowed him to truly embrace his sexuality and better express his emotions. Mickey still cared about Ian enough to rat out the cartel he worked for just so he could be in the same prison as him. Another display of his soft spot for Ian is that he bribed a prison guard to smuggle in a phone order so that Ian would get a chance to meet his new nephew. He was seen to be pleased to see Ian happy. Mickey was also willing to escape from prison once again to meet up with Ian, but it turned out to be in vain as he was about to be released anyway. He came to live at the Gallagher house and was able to start a proper relationship with Ian and share lunches and have intimate conversations. He also went out of his way to make sure that his wedding with Ian was amazing, both to anger his father and to show how much he cared for Ian.
History
He was first introduced as Mandy Milkovich's older brother and is depicted as a violent bully who terrorised Ian because Mandy accused him of assaulting her. However, this was cleared up but Mickey continued to dislike Ian. Due to his father's ways, Mickey was very violent and had a number of bad tendencies. At one point, he began terrorising Kash and stole the gun he kept in the shop for protection. When Ian confronts Mickey at his house, determined to get it back, a fight ensues. However, in the ensuing altercation, the pair realise their attraction and have sex, revealing that Mickey is a closeted homosexual and begins to befriend Ian after seeing that he is also gay. The pair maintain the sexual relationship, though Mickey denies any emotional attraction to Ian, which cools his relationship with Kash. Soon this develops into a relationship, though at first it seems that Ian is the boy most affected by their relationship. Mickey was unable to fully commit due to his family drama, whilst continuing his secret sleeping with women. In the end, there were signs that he cared more for Ian than he was willing to admit. Mickey and Ian were caught in the act, and Mickey was shot in the leg by Kash, Ian's jealous lover, and a fight broke out. As seen on Nana Gallagher Had An Affair, she ended up in reform school whilst being visited by Ian. He is himself and shows no concern for the situation.
During Parenthood, Ian's father Frank walks into Kash and Grab only to find the door locked. He turns around and picks up his usual supply of beer before being surprised by the bare backside of his son Ian, who is with Mickey. Frank's only reaction is to make several snide comments, making it incredibly clear that he knows they were having sex. Frank collects cigarettes and cash from the cash register and tells Ian and Mickey to add the items to his tab before leaving. Ian does not react to his father's surprise visit, but Mickey is concerned. Mickey claims that his father will kill him. Mickey threatens to kill Frank. Ian tries to talk him out of it, pointing out that Frank probably doesn't care and will most likely forget what he saw, but Mickey is unwilling to risk it. In the heat of their argument, Mickey, out of fear of the consequences of confronting his father, tells Ian that he is "finished" and that Ian is nothing more than a "warm mouth" to him. Later, he gathers his brothers and makes plans to kill Frank. Mickey follows Frank as he leaves Alibi and prepares to shoot him, but changes his mind and can't do it. Instead, he attacks a police officer, thus violating his parole so he can be put in jail.
In The American Dream, Mickey is shown interrupting a sexual encounter by Ian. As they catch up, it is revealed that Mickey would still be considered a freshman in high school because he has failed all of his subjects. In May I Trim Your Hedges?, Ian asks Mickey if he had sex with a neighbor named Angie and Mickey replies yes because "everyone fucks Angie". He then asks Ian if he ever had sex with her, to which Ian replies no. Dr. L arrives at the store inviting Ian on a date, causing Mickey to show signs of jealousy. After Dr. L leaves the store, Mickey asks Ian if that was his grandfather, to which Ian says that Dr. L is just a guy he was dating. Mickey asks what they do together and Ian bluntly says that they mostly just fuck, like Mickey and Angie. Mickey later appears near the diner where Dr. L and Ian are going on a date. Once Ian and Dr. L leave the place, Mickey walks up to them and a shocked Ian asks him what he's doing there. After recognizing who Mickey is, Dr. L tells Ian not to be rude and invite Mickey over to his house. However, this infuriates Mickey who headbutts Dr. L and punches him, though Ian stops him. The commotion attracts attention and the police begin to arrive to investigate, Mickey has to escape the scene but calls Ian to come with him, Ian briefly tries to comfort Dr. L and apologizes before promising to text him later and runs off with Mickey. They run into an alley where Ian angrily asks Mickey what's wrong but then they both laugh and run off together.
In The Sins of My Caretaker, Dr. L appears on Kash and Grab and asks Ian to break into his house to retrieve his suits, paints, and a bottle of wine (adding that Ian is free to steal whatever he wants). Later, while Ian and Mickey are hanging out together, Ian is put through an ROTC obstacle course. Ian informs Mickey of the plan to break into the house. Mickey is uninterested at first, but is later swayed by Ian's comments that Dr. L is rich and that they are free to take whatever they want. Mickey is quick to comment that he doesn't know what Ian sees in Dr. L, referring to him as a "geriatric viagroid", but Ian points out that he receives many benefits including gifts and room service, and, unlike Mickey, Dr. L is not afraid to kiss him. Ian and Mickey take two of the Milkovich cousins with them to rob the house, Ian waiting in the car. As the cousins enter the house, Mickey suddenly returns to the truck and gives Ian a kiss. Before Ian can react, Mickey begins to run back to the house. Ian is seen smiling in the truck as Mickey drives off. However, things quickly take a turn when the boys drop a clock and wake up Dr. L's wife, Candace, who appears with a gun and shoots Mickey in the butt. Ian quickly drives a wounded Mickey back to the Gallagher house, where Dr. L is called in to extract the bullet.
In Cascading Failures, Ian and Lip are placed in a Level 15 group home. While working at the store, Mickey advises Ian not to have sex with anyone as it could expose his sexuality and get him beaten up. He tells Ian that his father and brothers are out of town, so Ian can stay with him if he wants. Ian jokes, "Did they just invite me to a sleepover?", to which Mickey replies, "They invited you to get fucked." Ian laughs and looks at Mickey as the latter walks off to another part of the store. They stay up talking and watching movies that night - Mickey cooks for Ian and watches him as the movie starts. Ian is seen slowly turning to look at Mickey, but by then Mickey is already staring at the TV screen. They turn their attention back to the movie. Mickey is seen getting quite intimate with Ian as he shows him his Ben Wa beads, asking him to "do the honors." Ian, bewildered, picks up the beads and examines them, eventually joking, "Rosary for giants?" and holds them around Mickey's neck. Mickey smiles, telling him what they're really for. Ian looks at the beads again and replies, "How's that fun for me?" and pats Mickey on the back to go to the couch. But soon after they begin, Terry surprises them (coming home early from his trip). He becomes enraged and attacks Ian as he tries to get dressed, asking him if Mandy wasn't enough for him. Mickey jumps on top of Terry and tries to pull him away from Ian, saying, "Get off of him!" Terry then starts punching Mickey in the face. Ian tries to escape while Terry is worried about Mickey, but Terry pulls a gun on Ian and orders him to sit on the couch. Mickey goes to grab the gun, but Terry pistol-whips him. Terry then calls a Russian girl to "fuck Mickey's faggot."
Terry also forces Ian to watch, and both Ian and Mickey exchange glances as the woman mounts Mickey. Mickey quickly flips her over and has sex with her, wanting to prove to his father that he is "cured". In Long Way From Home, Mickey tries to isolate himself, but Ian finds him shooting a gun in a building. He tries to talk about what happened with Mickey, but Mickey doesn't say anything, leaving Ian frustrated. Later, Mandy mentions to Ian that Mickey is marrying a "slut he got pregnant". Ian finds Mickey again to talk about it. When Mickey does nothing but leave, Ian follows him and tries to get him to talk. Ian then tells Mickey to "beat him like a faggot" if it would help him feel like a man. Mickey punches Ian in the abdomen, and as Ian collapses from the blow, he looks away and curses, then grabs his bottle from the ground and walks away. But Ian tells Mickey to admit that he loves him. Mickey punches him in the face, Ian says, "Feel better now? Feel like a man?" Mickey kicks him in the mouth. Mickey then walks away saying, "Feel better now."
Later, Mandy reveals that Mickey's fiancée is the Russian prostitute Terry hired. On Mickey's wedding day, Ian pays him a surprise visit. Ian is furious and argues with Mickey, wanting him to not go through with the wedding if he gives "a shit" about him. Mickey grabs Ian and kisses him. They then have sex. Afterwards, Mickey tells Ian that he is still going through with the wedding and they fight again; Mickey questions why Ian makes it seem like he has a choice, to which Ian tries to tell him not to let Terry control him. Mickey tells Ian that he doesn't know anything about his father. Just then, Mandy walks in looking for Mickey, and Mickey leaves. Later, at the ceremony, Ian begins drinking. That night, after most of the guests leave, Lip arrives and fights with Mandy. Ian, drunk, starts talking to Lip, telling him that he should try to "watch <<...>> the guy he's been sleeping with marry some random communist bitch". Mandy overhears Ian and eventually finds out about him and Mickey. In Survival of the Fittest , time has passed and Mickey sees Ian again when the latter visits Mandy. Mickey tries to talk to him and maybe reconcile so they can continue their relationship, but Ian tells him about his plan to enlist. He'll be gone for at least 4 years. Mickey is shocked but says, "No... just..." and Ian leaves. Mandy walks in and asks if that was all she had to say to Ian. Mickey immediately looks at Mandy, realizing that she knows about him and Ian. Mandy calls him "a fucking faggot" and walks away. Mickey is left alone in his room.
In Simple Pleasures, Mickey is first seen at home managing the family's income, criticizing what his brother stole and how little his wife earned. His brother says, "There's an ATM card," to which Mickey replies, "Congratulations, it doesn't have any bloody PIN number on it. What are you going to do, steal from the same mailboxes every day until they send the PIN?" and looks at him in disgust. As Mandy walks to the table, Mickey asks who was at the door. Mandy tells Mickey that Debbie was looking for Ian, Mickey asks if she saw him, to which Mandy replies, "Why do you care?" Mickey casually says, "No." Later in the episode, Mickey is seen drinking at the Alibi. Mickey asks Kevin, "Any news from Gallagher?" Kevin assumes at first that he is asking about Frank, but Mickey says, "Not bloody Frank, but the other one. The red-headed one." Kevin hasn't heard from Ian, and when he goes to answer a phone call, he jokingly adds, "Why? Does he owe you money or something?" Mickey doesn't answer. The phone call turns out to be about Stan, the owner of the bar. Mickey, the other patrons, and Kevin cheer Stan up. Later, Mickey is seen at home, appearing in a hallway. He sees Mandy making out with her new boyfriend in her bedroom through the open door, and immediately closes it, saying, "Oh god, shut the fucking door! Nobody wants to see that Mandingo shit! Fuck!" He then angrily heads to the bathroom and slams the door shut, locking himself inside.
Mickey paces back and forth and eventually leans against the sink, watching his reflection in the mirror. After a pause, he walks over to a stack of magazines hidden beside the toilet and pulls one out, flipping through the pages until he finds a picture of Ian. Mickey stares at the picture for a while before pulling it out and putting it on the mirror. He attempts to pleasure himself while looking at Ian's picture, but fails and out of anger and frustration, punches the mirror. Soon Mickey's wife Svetlana knocks on the door and asks if he's okay, to which he replies after a slight pause, "Yeah... I slipped." When asked to hurry up, Mickey takes one last look at Ian's picture; and returns the picture and magazine to the pile on the floor. As he leaves the bathroom, his wife watches him leave and looks at the broken mirror. In Like Father, Like Son, Mickey is seen drinking. While Kevin and another customer were talking about a subject, they stare at Mickey. Kevin points out a "red-headed" woman at the other end of the bar and suggests that Mickey buy her a drink. Mickey doesn't do so, instead making a direct proposition. Mickey is seen having sex with her in the Alibi's bathroom.
In Strangers on a Train, Mickey drags Svetlana with him to confront his boss about his low pay. Since the boss was absent and only one guard was present, Mickey confronts him instead. The guard says that Sasha (the boss) decides how much the prostitutes make for their work, and Mickey replies that Sasha needs to know that "his wife is a prostitute, not a slave." At the guard's indifference, Mickey kicks all the prostitutes out of their rooms (even if they had clients). As all the prostitutes (some are seemingly confused but follow the crowd) leave with Mickey, Mickey tells the guard, "No one is having sex until they get paid." Mickey takes the prostitutes to the Alibi and announces to Kevin how he "emancipated his wife and her fellow cum drinkers," and how he is their "Abe Lincoln." Mickey soon receives a message from Sasha, who wants a meeting, Mickey prepares to leave the bar. When Mickey returns to the store, he finds it empty and eerily quiet, he cautiously pulls out his gun and heads towards the back. Sasha meets the guard outside the back of the store, Mickey negotiates with Sasha to pay the hookers more, but she shows him the new hookers she has gathered and tells him to "fuck off". Mickey realizes he doesn't have much bargaining power. Mickey is forced to let them temporarily stay at his house, until he figures out what to do. The hookers constantly ramble on. One time, Svetlana angrily tells Mickey that he has "taken jobs" from them and "They say you're a stupid idiot!"
In Iron City, Mickey does not appear, but events occur that may set the stage for possible future events: Terry is arrested again, having tested positive for another urine test. Lip was on his way to visit the Milkovich house when he witnessed the arrest. Lip tells Mandy what happened and asks her to tell Ian. Mandy agrees to do so. In A Jailbird, Invalid, Martyr, Cutter, Retard, And Parasitic Twin, Mandy confronts Mickey about Ian and tells him to go find him. She tells Mickey that she has been looking for him, but couldn't find him; he was ignoring her text message. Mickey arrives at a club called The White Swallow, showing the manager a picture of Ian and asking if he has seen him. The manager claims not to know Ian and tells Mickey to buy himself a drink and fall in love with someone else. Mickey threatens the manager with a number of different charges, before revealing that Ian is at the club's second location. Mickey goes to the club and finds Ian doing a lap dance with an older man; Mickey tries to talk to him, Mickey agrees to pay him. During Ian's dance, Mickey continues to coax him into leaving with him. Ian ignores Mickey. The dance ends and Ian tries to leave. Mickey tells him it's okay if he doesn't want to hang out with Mickey, but Ian needs to call his family. Ian seems interested, despite his shaking. However, Mickey leaves the club alone. Later, Ian is seen with a man, waiting for an Uber. Ian is clearly high, wearing only a tank top. The man tells Ian he plans to take him home, but Mickey shows up. Ian passes out. Mickey picks him up.
At the Milkovich house, Mickey stares at Ian. Svetlana appears, and slowly, Mickey becomes aware of her watching him. At Hope Springs Paternal, Svetlana kicks Ian out of Mickey's house, threatening him with a hammer. Svetlana informs Mickey about this, at the Alibi, in front of Kevin, without mentioning Ian's name, only calling him "carrot boy". Mickey goes to find Ian at the Gallagher house and agrees to give him oral pleasure. He spends the night sleeping on the floor. Mandy comes to tell Mickey that his wife is about to give birth. He refuses to go see her, saying that he "doesn't even know if the baby is his". After Mandy and Ian's siblings leave the kitchen, Mickey offers him coffee. Ian asks Mickey to come see him at work. At the club, Mickey threatens a man who tried to touch Ian. Ian tells Mickey that they've been invited to an after-party. To Mickey's discomfort, Ian tries to kiss him. Mickey pulls away, shocked, but then looks around and realizes the reason Ian brought him there. He looks at Ian to kiss him. Ian kisses him back. Ian and Mickey end up spending the night together on a camp bed. The host wakes Mickey up to ask him what he wanted for breakfast and then asks if he and Ian just met.
In The Legend of Bonnie and Carl, Svetlana holds the baby and confronts Mickey. Svetlana says she doesn't make enough to take care of the baby. Svetlana asks Mickey to take care of the baby. She threatens Mickey, demanding $500. Mickey goes to meet Ian outside the club to ask for money. Ian doesn't have enough. They go to a hotel where Ian proposes to an older, rich man at the bar. After entering the hotel room, the man throws Ian onto the bed and Mickey comes out of the closet to take a photo. Mickey then punches the man in the face. Ian puts his clothes back on. Confused, the man announces he's going to call the police; but Mickey stops him, threatening to "report" him. Mickey says they're "going to take a trip to the ATM." Mickey is working at The Alibi when Svetlana reveals her baby's name to him. Mickey gives her $500, but she threatens him again. Mickey then returns home. Svetlana isn't there. Kenyatta runs into Mickey on his way out. Yevgeny's nanny asks Mickey if he wants to babysit Yevgeny. He says no and goes into his room. When he goes into the bathroom, he runs into his sister, who has presumably just been beaten by Kenyatta. Mickey is shocked and Mandy abruptly closes the door and asks, "What the hell are you looking at?"
In Liver, I Hardly Know Her, Mickey walks into the kitchen, where Ian is cooking pancakes. They chat and Mickey gives Ian money for the meal. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Ian has been sleeping very little. Ian has a "ton of energy." Debbie comes downstairs and tells Ian that Fiona is gone. Then Mandy comes into the kitchen. When Mickey is at work, where he treats "his bitches" badly, Kevin confronts him about the money, believing Mickey stole it. Mickey tells him that "it's his money." Kevin, who has just had his twins, loses his patience and points his gun at Mickey. Mickey says, "You're robbing me with my own gun?" and tells Kevin that he "better pull the trigger." Kevin insists on that and Mickey tells him, "Big mistake." Mickey leaves the house, the police arrive to ask about Fiona. Mickey warns Debbie and Carl.
In Emily, Mickey informs Ian that he is "going to his son's christening," but when Ian offers to accompany him, Mickey asks him not to. Ian snaps and asks "if he and Mickey are a couple." Ian is unhappy that Mickey has been "covered up." Mickey goes to the christening alone. Svetlana insists on going for Terry, who never arrives. Ian shows up. Then, at the after-party, Svetlana tells Mickey that she doesn't want Ian and demands that he leave. When Mickey tells Ian this, they begin to argue. Ian tells Mickey that "if Mickey makes Ian leave, Mickey shouldn't bother coming home." Mickey's father then arrives and Svetlana threatens Mickey again; because Ian hasn't left. Ian then takes Mickey aside to tell him that he is "leaving." When Mickey tells him to meet him at home, Ian tells him that they are "over." Ian says "I'm tired of being a mistress," and leaves Mickey. Before Ian leaves, Mickey calls everyone over and announces that he is "gay." No one seems affected by the announcement, Terry is enraged. He and Mickey fight each other until Ian headbutts Terry. Mickey and Terry are arrested, with Terry continuing to yell gay slurs at him, but Mickey retaliates by telling him about his activities with Ian as revenge for the treatment he received. Mickey laughs as Terry is taken away and is soon released by a gay police officer who supports his decisions and Mickey is shocked but relieved. Afterwards, Mickey and Ian are outside, Mickey and Ian laughing.
In Lazarus, Svetlana offers Mickey the chance to have sex with her. No longer blackmailed by her, he turns her down. However, Svetlana shares that she is potentially bisexual and wants another woman to accompany her. She also demands Mickey to help her more with the baby. Mickey returns to the bedroom in which Ian is hiding under the covers. After being ignored, Mickey leaves.
Mickey goes to the bar and comes home, Ian is still in bed. When Mickey keeps asking what's wrong, Ian finally tells him to leave him alone.
Mickey then shows up at the Gallagher house. When Carl tells him that Lip isn't home, Mickey tells Carl that Ian isn't responding to him. Carl and Deb accompany Mickey to the Milkovich house to try to figure out what's wrong with Ian. Ian isn't responding to them either. Debbie says she recognizes his symptoms.
Fiona is then taken to see Ian, who also refuses to answer her. Fiona shares that she thinks Ian might be bipolar like his mother and suggests taking him to the clinic. Mickey gets along well with Svetlana and is actively involved in his son's life. He has accepted his sexuality and is trying to be productive.
Much of season five revolves around Mickey trying to deal with Ian.
In Love Songs (In the Key of Gallagher), Ian breaks up with Mickey, stating that he "doesn't need to be fixed". This refers to his bipolar disorder, which Mickey feels Ian needs to control by taking medication, while Ian refuses to do so; because he hates the way the medication makes him feel. Their fight was interrupted when Sammi appeared brandishing a gun as she chased him down the alley. Ian seemed indifferent to the danger Mickey was in or the harm he had caused her. Mickey is heard cursing at Sammi, as they run before police cars follow them.
In I Only Miss Her When I'm Breathing, Svetlana, Yevgeny, and Ian went to visit Mickey in prison (which he only agreed to do after Svetlana agreed to pay him fifty dollars). Mickey is serving eight years in jail for the attempted murder of Sammi Slott. He is being paid to commit acts of violence against other inmates, as revealed by Svetlana when she tells him to stab a man in the eye. Mickey also reveals a tattoo of Ian's name on his chest. He asks Ian to wait for him, but Ian lied and told him he would wait for him. Mickey remains incarcerated for the rest of the season.
Although he doesn't appear in person, Mickey's presence is felt on multiple occasions. Later, Ian mentioned Mickey to his future boyfriend Caleb and gave him details, much to Caleb's amusement. Kev mentions Mickey due to Svetlana and Mickey never being legally married. Svetlana mentions him in Own Your Shit and calls him a jailbird because he's no longer her husband.
In Ouroboros, Mickey has escaped from prison and the police inform Ian about his escape as they know where he is. Ian was shocked to learn that Mickey is on the loose.
In Ride or Die, Mickey has some old contacts kidnap Ian and take him to his old stomping grounds at a stadium. Mickey now sports longer hair and a beard. He ignores Ian's protests about being kidnapped and implores him to flee with him across the border with one of his fellow fugitives. He gives Ian time to think about it. Later, Ian visits him and Mickey asks if he's coming to say goodbye, but the latter agrees to go with him.
The trip goes well in Happily Ever After, as the two have a good time smoking and having sex, though Mickey's partner makes it worse by robbing a store. Mickey and Ian are forced to ditch the latter after seeing him as an obstacle. They soon encounter a bootlegger who refuses to help as they are a threat that could ruin his business. Mickey soon goes with Ian to a bank and is shocked that Ian set up an account to simply withdraw money and not steal it as he had assumed. Ian tells him that they need to lay low and Mickey agrees. On the way, Ian thinks better of it and leaves him. Saddened but seeing his decision is made, Mickey escapes the country alone dressed as a woman. His father mentions him in Black Haired Ginger and says that he is still in Mexico when Ian comes to visit.
When Ian is sentenced to two years in prison for his role as gay Jesus in Face It, You're Gorgeous, he discovers that Mickey is his new cellmate. Mickey explains to a shocked Ian that he worked as an informant during his time with a cartel in exchange for being able to choose where he would be locked up again. The two lovers happily reunite and kiss, continuing their relationship.
In Found, when Fiona visits Ian in prison, he mentions that Mickey is working in the prison laundry. Fiona is amused by this and asks Ian to send her pictures.
During Sleep Well My Prince For Tomorrow You Will Be King, Mickey is still in prison with Ian and things seem to be turbulent in the six months that passed. Most of the other inmates in the prison are known to get out of hand from repeated arguments. At one point, Ian suggests that they take a break with him by going to solitary confinement after stabbing an inmate. Outraged, Mickey decides to stab that prisoner instead and is sent to solitary confinement himself but they are locked up due to the jail. The next day, they both break into the medical bay and repeatedly stab the inmate when a guard shows up and is familiar with the inmate and stops this. He has them both come with him and tells the two to stop arguing.
In Which America?, Mickey continues to have issues with Ian, especially when he soon receives a letter telling him that he has a parole hearing. While he is excited, Mickey is not too pleased, as he went through all of this to be with him. This sparks an argument that ends with Ian saying that he will give up his parole. Later, he and Ian talk again and he reveals that he spoke to Debbie and learned that Lip has his son, but the call was cut off. Later, Mickey meets with older prisoners who knew his father and were on good terms with him. Mickey discusses his issues with them and the prisoners tell him that he should have had "the talk", which is the plan for what to do after release. They implore Mickey to let Ian make his own decisions, something that he considers. Later, Mickey saw Ian attempt to stab another prisoner. However, Mickey had anticipated this and along with a couple of other prisoners they stop Ian and take him back to his cell. Mickey tells Ian that he needs to be released to meet his new addition to the family and that they will figure something out. That night, Mickey and Ian are in their cell before a guard arrives and Mickey bribes him into giving him an item. Mickey gives the item to Ian, which is a phone that Mickey had smuggled in. Pleased with this, Ian quickly calls his brother at Mickey's urging. Mickey watches Ian see his new nephew as he smiles at the latter's awe.
During Adios Gringos, Mickey attempts to escape from prison, but fails when a guard finds him attempting to smuggle medical waste that is being sent to the incinerator instead of being loaded onto the truck. Mickey is sent to the warden's office and is berated by the warden for his attempts to escape, while also revealing that he was already scheduled to be released. Mickey is shocked to hear that his previous work as an informant is actually helping his case and that he has been moved up on the early release list. Happy to hear this, Mickey awaits his release, but is told that the cartel from his work as an informant is looking for him. While on the bus, Mickey becomes paranoid about his previous cartel workers following him. He jumped off the bus and ran until the car finds him. Mickey is shocked to learn that the car following him was actually that of his kindly parole officer Larry Seaver, who was just giving him a ride. Presumably his parole officer dumped him, but Mickey was forced to sneak into Ian's window at the Gallagher house. Mickey tells his shocked boyfriend about his release and they happily reunite with a kiss. Mickey then moves into the Gallagher house where he is happy to be with Ian, however when the latter gets into trouble with his parole officer, Mickey is concerned and the officer recognises him as a Milkovich, stating that if he had accepted him, he would have really moved up.
In Citizen Carl, Mickey continues to live at the Gallagher house, where his cousin Sandy Milkovich leaves some of his belongings. They catch up, and Mickey rejects his implied sexual advances. A brief scene occurs where Ian comes to Mickey's defense. When Ian complains about his parole officer, Mickey tells him to suck it up and leaves for the new job Larry has lined up for him. Mickey is shown to have been given the job of a security guard at the mall's clothing store. Mickey is forced to go to work after one of the employees catches a person shoplifting. Mickey chases her down, and after stopping her, threatens her by telling her that he just got out of prison, so he has no qualms about hurting her, forcing her to turn herself in. Sometime later, while having lunch with Ian, the latter once again complains about his parole officer. At that moment, Paula shows up and antagonizes the pair. Mickey remarks that he is happy that she is not his parole officer. However, Paula reveals that she has manipulated Larry and is now Mickey's parole officer as well. Paula remarks that he will be of great use to her since he is a Milkovich. Mickey is forced to track down Paula's parolee who has escaped her sight and, at her urging, throws him out of a window. In the end, he agrees with Ian that Paula has to die.
During Debbie Might Be a Prostitute, he and Ian were preparing to hang out before the police visit them. Mickey runs away from them on instinct and is soon found by Ian after the police leave. Mickey was informed that Paula was murdered after being thrown out of a window. Mickey is delighted, but he and Ian are suspicious of each other. Some time later, he visits his family and asks his father for advice after telling him about Paula and Ian's behavior. Mickey suggests that he take the blame, but Terry says that because of Milkovich's reputation, it is a bad idea. After his family suggests that he marry Ian to avoid testifying, Terry rejects the idea expressing his disgust before his niece states that she was also gay. Mickey meets Ian at Patsy's and tells him that Larry is once again his parole officer. Mickey and Ian go to the courthouse to get married before they suddenly see a news bulletin revealing that Paula was pushed out of a window by another of their paroled inmates. Despite the good news, Mickey is upset that Ian doesn't want to marry him and pushes him down the stairs, breaking his leg.
In Now Leaving Illinois, Ian approaches Mickey only to discover that Mickey has a new boyfriend, Byron, whose Vespa is no longer running since Ian urinated in its gas tank. Mickey refuses to talk to Ian alone, stating that anything Ian wants to say he can say to Mickey in front of the "love of my life, Byron." Thinking he made a mistake, Ian starts to leave, but Byron invites him to join them at a show. In response to Mickey's hint that Ian has "a lot of personal work to do before he can play the field," Ian states that he took a page out of Mickey's playbook and hooked up with the first person he could find and had come to tell Mickey that he had moved on. However, Ian was lying to Mickey and desperately searches Grindr for a date to cover for him. At the show, Mickey is having fun with Ian's date Cole, while Ian overhears Byron telling another guy that he slept with Mickey once and then moved in with him, so Byron brought Ian to the show in an attempt to get rid of Mickey. Byron insults Mickey, causing Ian to punch Byron while Mickey knocks out Cole for his own comments. Ian proposes to Mickey on the spot, only for Mickey to interrupt his speech and accept his proposal, leading to the two kissing. Mickey returns home with Ian for Lip's family reunion, where Mickey initially suspects that Lip is going to tell them that he is going to prison. Lip reveals to the family that he is moving with Tami and their son to Milwaukee.
In Gallavich, flashbacks show Mickey committing a series of armed robberies to pay for his and Ian's wedding. Ian and Mickey's wedding venue is burned down by Terry, leaving Mickey homicidally angry at his father to the point that Ian has to restrain him and then handcuff Mickey to stop him from doing anything reckless. Mickey is convinced that until Terry is dead, he can never be happy and dismisses his friends and family's attempts to find an alternative solution. The others eventually find a new venue at a polka lounge, but it requires Mickey to pretend to marry Debbie due to the homophobic owner. With Debbie distracting the owner, Kevin preventing the bartender from intervening, and Ian's Gay Jesus followers keeping Terry away, Ian and Mickey are able to marry and Mickey is escorted down the aisle by Sandy. Ian and Mickey enjoy their reception, dancing to Ed Sheeran's "Perfect" and then drive off in a Mercedes owned by Frank's ex Faye to their honeymoon. However, while celebrating their honeymoon and deciding on their last name, Ian and Mickey's hotel room is shot at by a still-angry Terry. Fortunately, neither Ian nor Mickey are harmed. Terry and the two are still not on board with their union.

It is implied that his cousin Sandy is attracted to him, but Mickey is disgusted by her incestuous advances. Mickey later confirms to Debbie in Season 11 that he and Sandy committed incest. In Season 1, Mickey and the gang confront Karen and Lip, and Karen says, "Mickey will probably ask me out again," and he "smells like cow shit." But later in the show, Carl asks Ian if he loves Mickey, and Ian says, "I like the way he smells." Mickey is estranged from his son Yevgeny Milkovich. Mickey's family is of Ukrainian descent. Because Svetlana used the Russian Orthodox Church for Yevgeny's baptism, it is possible that her family is also aligned with the Russian Orthodox Church, which could explain her family's homophobic beliefs and her own history of internalized homophobia. Mickey's given name, Mikhailo, is the Ukrainian version of the name Michael. When Lip introduces Mickey as the boyfriend to the owner of Polish Doll during Gallavich, he introduces him as "Michael", and she proceeds to call him Michał, the Polish version of the name. Mickey has at least 3 visible tattoos in season 10. FUCK U-UP on his knuckles A skull and the legend "SOUTH SIDE ALWAYS" on his right forearm Ian Galoger - on his chest, which he himself did in prison and wrote wrong. By season 10, he and Terry are already on neutral terms, but Terry still doesn't approve of his relationship with Ian. However, tensions between Terry and Mickey return after Ian and Mickey become engaged. Terry threatens Mickey at gunpoint, burns down the original wedding venue, and possibly organized or participated in an attempted shooting of Ian and Mickey after the wedding.
