Appearance

Benimaru is a young, well-built man of average height. He is fair-skinned with neck-length, wavy black hair[5] that partially covers the front of his face. His right pupil is a red circle with a black dot in the middle, and his iris is also black; while his left eye has a red iris and a white X-shaped pupil,[5] reminiscent of the game tic-tac-toe or the Japanese symbols for affirmation and negation. He normally has a somber facial expression. Benimaru's attire consists of a white T-shirt with a black vest over it, a grey (dark blue in the anime) kimono upper garment that he only wears on his left arm, and the pants of the Special Fire Force uniform that he tucks into his black boots. Previously, he wore black fingerless gloves and a black jersey, which he wraps around his waist.

When not assisting on a mission, Benimaru is seen wearing a black T-shirt under a black samurai-style hakama, with a white strap around his waist acting as a belt, and black boots. Benimaru is later seen wearing a black shirt under a grey (dark blue in the anime) kimono top with the Special Fire Brigade uniform pants and black boots.

Personality

Benimaru is hot-tempered, preferring to work alone or solely with his brigade and can be somewhat disrespectful towards many of his superiors. Despite this, he has a great deal of faith in himself and his brigade. He does not care about any part of Tokyo other than Asakusa, does not care about the rules the emperor has created and proudly acts on his own agenda alongside his brigade. He is an honest man, though sometimes honest to the point of being rude to others. Although Benimaru destroys buildings and houses in Asakusa when confronted by an Infernal, he is seen by the citizens as a hero and benevolent. He seems to care about Asakusa and the people residing within it and is upset at having to end the life of someone he once knew and becomes very angry when he is misinformed, as evidenced by the cause of Kantarō's death which angered him to the point of fighting the entire Eighth Brigade.

Generally, he is very calm and carefree, even while purifying Infernals, but when angered, he fights recklessly. He also has a passionate side that takes pride in his skills and longs for opponents to give him a worthwhile fight. Benimaru is an original rural idealist who prefers to be called Shinmon Benimaru and call others by their surnames rather than their given names. [6] At the start of the attack on Asakusa, Benimaru was hesitant and unconfident about acting as a leader and taking control of the citizens, and would rather let Konro do the job, but after encouragement from his brigade, he eventually stepped up. Despite his nonchalant demeanor, Benimaru is quite passionate about the value of free will and despises the dogmatic faith of the Holy Sun that preaches blind faith over human endeavor and disdains the oppressive nature of the gods.

Bottom

Benimaru was an orphan before he was adopted by Hibachi Shinmon, who was in need of an heir. Hibachi taught him all about the Iai Shutō fighting style and all of its forms and was a strict teacher. He constantly belittled Benimaru for being a fool for his inability to use the Sun Wheel properly due to his insecurity and punished him whenever he got into a pointless fight. Benimaru needed Konro Sagamiya to communicate his master's good intentions through the man's brutal attitude. Even as a child, Benimaru was a member of the fire department and helped put Infernals to rest.

Skills

Benimaru is considered the strongest officer of the Fire Task Force,[7] and is known as "Asakusa's King of Destruction" due to the devastating power he can unleash.[1] He was able to completely overwhelm the combined might of Maki Oze, Shinra Kusakabe, Tamaki Kotatsu, Arthur Boyle, and Takehisa Hinawa.[8] His most impressive feat to date is effortlessly defeating his doppelgänger, who was on the verge of destroying the planet, with a single touch. He is also a very capable teacher, training both Shinra and Arthur on multiple occasions to become stronger in relatively short periods of time,[9][10] even helping them unlock access to the Hysterical Force, something he himself has already accessed.[11] According to Konro, Benimaru has surpassed his former teacher, Hibachi Shinmon, who was also a famously powerful pyrokinetic.[12]

Master of Hand-to-Hand Combat: Benimaru is an extremely skilled and powerful hand-to-hand combatant, as demonstrated when he easily outclassed and defeated Maki Oze, another advanced hand-to-hand combatant. He is also a master practitioner of the martial arts iaido. [13]

Immense Speed: Benimaru is extremely fast and has extraordinary reflexes. He is able to move faster than the eye can see and outrun even the fastest of opponents, such as his own master's doppelgänger. He is also able to outrun Shinra's Quick Technique and counterattack instantly, allowing Shinra to move at hypersonic speeds. [14]

Immense Strength: Benimaru possesses tremendous levels of physical strength. As a child, he could match the strength of his master Hibachi, and was capable of restraining a grown man with his bare hands. After permanently unlocking Hysterical Strength, Benimaru's strength allowed him to completely overpower Shinra and Arthur simultaneously and continue to beat them for several hours. Benimaru's natural physical power combined with his innate mastery of martial arts makes him an incredibly powerful opponent to take on in close quarters, which is further amplified by his pyrokinetic fighting style. His strength is further displayed during his battle against the doppelgängers, where he was able to go toe-to-toe with Hibachi Shinmon's doppelgänger, with his physical blows warping reality around him and later when he killed his own doppelgänger in one blow.

Immense Durability: Benimaru possesses incredible levels of durability, capable of completely nullifying blows from Demon Infernals, Doppelgängers, and even incredibly powerful individuals such as Dragon and Charon.

Poison Resistance: Benimaru is a remarkably resilient man, as he somehow survived and rejected a dose of poison that would normally kill large animals instantly.

Pyrokinesis: Benimaru possesses the rare trait of being a Second and Third Generation Pyrokinetic, allowing him to ignite his own flames willingly and also control flames from external sources. [15] The sheer power and size of his flames are tremendous, as is his extremely precise and fluid control of said flames. He was able to completely annihilate his doppelgänger, who managed to create a Nichirin around the entire planet with the ability to destroy it, declaring that he is indeed stronger than his double. Due to possessing both Second and Third Generation abilities, Benimaru is an expert in all types of combat, as his abilities allow him to create long-range destructive projectiles, redirect external heat sources and gunfire, amplify his martial arts, and nullify and redirect almost any pyrokinetic attack. One of his greatest feats of heat control was during the rescue of Obi. When facing the White-Clad disguised as "Moonlit Mask", he renders two pillars, Haumea and Inca, completely useless, as his control domain prevents them from manipulating the flames around them within a 4 meter radius. Inca herself notices that fact, and seems very surprised. She also seems unfazed by Charon's physical attacks, but also by his "counter" Iai Chop. This, coupled with his incredible abilities, make Benimaru one of, if not the, most powerful characters in Fire Force.

Due to his extraordinary prowess in both his Second and Third Generation abilities, Benimaru is compared by Konro to the god "Kagutsuchi". [16] With his perfected Sun Wheel behind him, Benimaru is said to be like "Acala" himself. [17] His master, Hibachi Shinmon, even being a doppelgänger, had to admit that he was "a child of the heavens", as Konro had always thought. This is exemplified by the fact that flames, no matter the source, are his allies due to his ability to create and manipulate flames. He also has a talent for replicating other people's flame techniques and abilities immediately upon contact. He can use his brigade's matoi as a pole to fly to long-distance areas, [18] and can control other ignited targets to direct them from great distances. [19] She can control the direction and speed of bullets in the same manner as Takehisa Hinawa, [20] and create a four-meter barrier around herself that does not allow heat to pass through. [21] She is also capable of unleashing an immensely powerful explosion that resembles a crimson-colored moon. [22] She can also create a sharp blade of flames with her hand, a technique that stems from her unique fighting style. [23]

During his fight with his master's doppelgänger, after being criticized and reminded by the demon of his failures, he fully embraced his status as ruler of both the sun and the moon, and created a new technique: the Crimson Moon Sun Wheel, which allowed him to kill Hibachi Shinmon (doppelgänger).

The power of her pyrokinesis is so great that in the fight against Hibachi's doppelganger, the flames generated caused Adolla to become closer to reality [24].

Techniques - Iaidō hand - Sword.

"First Form - Fire Moon": A third generation technique. The user ignites and creates a sharp blade of flames in the palm of their hand, and swings it in the direction of their target, creating a crescent-shaped flame that pushes the target back, while dealing great damage.

"Third Form - Dawn": A third generation technique. The user ignites and creates a sharp blade of flames in the palm of his hand and performs a powerful upward slash.

"Fourth Form - Red Sun": A third generation technique. The user ignites and creates a sharp blade of flames in the palm of his hands and releases a very powerful beam of flames.

"Fifth Form - Sunset": A third generation technique. The user ignites and creates a sharp blade of flames in the palm of their hand, and swings it in the direction of their target, creating a crescent-shaped flame that pushes the target back, while dealing great damage.

"Seventh Form - Sun Wheel": A third generation technique, the user creates a ring of flames behind him, resembling the sun, and throws it at his opponent.

Plot

Special Fire Force Company 1 Arc VS:

Benimaru and his team confront a giant from Hell that appeared in Asakusa, noting that it was larger than normal, but encouraging his team not to be afraid. Shortly after, Benimaru and his team defeat it.

Preacher's Persecution Arc:

Benimaru attends the captains' conference in central Tokyo along with Konro, representing the 7th Brigade. Shinra looks at him with a smile on his face and Benimaru responds rudely. As everyone begins to pray as the Emperor of Tokyo enters, Benimaru sits relaxed, with his feet up on the row of chairs in front of him, showing little respect. The discussion begins, but before everyone can agree to have all the Special Fire Brigades work to find the Evangelist, Benimaru speaks up, stating that the 7th Brigade will act on their own, wanting nothing to do with anything else, and leaves the room.

Asakusa Arc:

Benimaru is seen in his hometown, Asakusa. When he returns to his headquarters after a walk, Konro tells him that the 8th wants to pay a visit, which Benimaru wants to ignore due to his lack of concern for the Evangelist's research, but soon the 8th Brigade approaches in person. Reiterating to the Brigade his disinterest in the White Dress's research or anything else, he ends up in a dispute with Shinra, but is interrupted by a sudden alert about an Infernal appearing, and attends the scene to purify it. After destroying several houses using his rare ability as the Second and Third Generation, he confronts Kantarō, claiming that he had hurt himself and that the role of the beasts had been fulfilled. He quickly puts an end to Kantarō's life, commenting that he had done a good job of enduring the pain. As if nothing had happened, he sits back down in his headquarters and takes a bite of the daifuku, saying that it is too sweet. As time passes, a funeral commemoration is held for Kantarō. Benimaru orders his brigade to repair the houses that were destroyed in the confrontation. As the 7th and 8th brigades get to work, Benimaru heals Konro's wounds and talks to Konro, saying that he should be the captain instead of him, but Konro states that he is not fit to be a captain. Soon after, Konro reaffirms the idea of collaborating with the 8th, and Benimaru sees it as a possibility after noticing the 8th willingly helping with repairs. As he heads out to find Akitaru Ōbi, he bumps into Shinra, who apologizes for their earlier interaction. Afterwards, Shinra tells him where Akitaru and Takehisa are, and as Benimaru walks towards them, he hears them say that they will light more people in Asakusa on fire like they did with Kantarō, which initially shocks Benimaru.

Shortly after, an enraged Benimaru chases after the two, throwing burning objects at them, claiming that they killed Kantarō and plan to create other artificial Infernals, but the two have no idea what he is talking about. Benimaru continues his hot pursuit, not listening to what they have to say, and an all-out battle begins between him and the 8th. Unbeknownst to everyone, two White Hoods hide on a roof, posing as Akitaru and Takehisa and preparing for their next move. While Benimaru easily dismantles the group one by one, a fully-equipped Akitaru comes out alone prepared to fight the captain one on one. As the two begin the confrontation, and Benimaru chooses not to listen to Akitaru, the 8th's captain continually regains his strength as he is thrown to the ground numerous times. Both captains deal a fair amount of damage to each other, and realizing that weak attacks won't work, Benimaru prepares his final attack, but Konro intervenes and grabs Benimaru while using his Ignition ability, weakening him from his Tephrosis and Benimaru turning his attention to helping him rather than fighting. Now calm, Shinmon can now hear the eyewitnesses' claims that neither Obi nor Hinawa could have been the men he saw and that there could be something going on within the city and follows Konro's lead by remaining calm.

Walking through the streets, Benimaru comes across an unusual amount of fistfights, and realizes that there are dozens of mistaken identities. The citizens of Asakusa continue to fight, and though Benimaru tries to intervene to stop them, they don't listen to him. Soon after, he is alerted to multiple fires and hellish sightings. He rushes to find Konro to take control of the situation by flying over the city with his matoi. They exchange information about the attack on Asakusa, and Benimaru tells Konro that the people are looking for him to lead and tell them what to do, but Konro states that Benimaru is the true leader and that he should take command. A passerby calls out to Konro asking for his help in finding Benimaru, causing Shinmon to realize his duty and that the people are looking for him as a leader. Watching the destruction of Asakusa, Benimaru says that he will bring destruction to the White Hoods.

Climbing to the top of the 7th Special Fire Fighting Station, he uses the supports from the attacks and uses the tower as a platform to draw the attention of the crazed city. Inhaling to find his voice, he finally lets out a loud scream, which successfully reaches everyone's ears and alerts them of the enemies acting as disguises. With everyone cheering him on, the citizens' attitudes instantly changed, and Benimaru finally orders Company 7 to focus on putting out the fires and defeating the infernals while telling the citizens to fight each other to uncover the disguised enemies. As the city erupts in joyous violence, Benimaru spots an infernal demon and rushes to fight it. Saving Shinra and Arthur from above, Benimaru begins to fight the demonic cultist. Realizing that his normal attacks are ineffective, Benimaru decides to take the battle to the skies to unleash his full strength.

Vulcan Workshop Arch:

Shinra and Arthur arrive at Benimaru to train. He teaches them how to be hyper-aware. Shinra tells Benimaru that his captain uses something similar. Shinra and Arthur attack Benimaru. Shinra notices that he anticipates his attacks and Benimaru says that it is enough. Benimaru tells Shinra that strength is fine, but he doesn't seem to want to really use it. Benimaru tells Shinra that he is missing one thing: an invincible ability. Shinra loses focus. Benimaru scolds him and tells him that he has his own abilities that work with his speed. Viktor Licht praises Benimaru. Viktor explains what Shinra's charm is and apologizes to Benimaru. Viktor introduces himself properly and wants to help train Shinra. Benimaru makes an example of what Viktor said. Benimaru tells Shinra to do what he just did and Arthur to focus on that battle with killing intent.

Shinra focuses on how Benimaru controls his flame to get a clue. Benimaru tells Arthur that if their fight was real, he would have died several times over. Arthur tells Benimaru to keep his eyes on him. Benimaru tells him if he wants the element of surprise to be more silent and tells him that the attack wasn't bad. Benimaru defeats Arthur and tells Shinra to try again. Benimaru shows Shinra in the ancient art of genkoku that there were hand signs and he controls his flames with them. Benimaru shows him the sign for tiger and explains the signs the importance of them. He asks Arthur if he's going to sleep on the job. Benimaru tells Shinra to congratulate him for figuring it out. Benimaru tells Shinra to use that ability on him. Benimaru tells him to run faster than his fireball and Shinra asks how it went. Benimaru tells him that it was pretty good and if he improves the movements he won't have any problems. Benimaru stops and asks Arthur if he had thought of a new ability for his new skill. Shinra names it the Kick Kick and Benimaru objects to the name.

Arch of the Temple of the Holy Sun vs. VS:

An unknown man approaches Benimaru in Asakusa to discuss information relating to the Temple of the Holy Sun. Viewing the information as dangerous and questioning whether the man intended to visit the church, Benimaru asks him who he is, to which he replies that he is a Dark Hero. Though he seems suspicious, he intrigues Benimaru's interests. Storming the Temple of the Holy Sun - Holy See, Benimaru defeats all of the church elites that confront him, including one member who poisons him with a blowgun. Unaware of how he survived the lethal poison, the pair enter the church. Discovering that the occupants have left for the Underworld, the two exit through a secret entrance beneath the chapel. Upon entering, Joker reveals that he used to be part of the Church, before the pair confront Shadow of the Holy Sun. Instructed to handle all of the members while Joker confronts their captain, Benimaru quickly defeats all of his opponents using his martial arts and Ignition ability. After the fight is over, Leonard Burns approaches them.

Stigma Arch:

Hearing that Shinra and Hibana were attacking Konro, Konro said that he handled the situation before attacking Shinra. Surprised that he dodged it, Benimaru saw that Shinra was capable of fighting now. Questioning Benimaru how he can fight the White-Clad when Rapid and Corna don't work on some of them, he suggested that Hysterical Strength would work against them and agrees to train Company 8. The next day, Shinra returns with Arthur and Tamaki. He instructs Hinata and Hikage to train Tamaki, fighting the boys to push them beyond their limits. After Tamaki accomplishes his task, he stops the twins from continuing their fight and confirms to Tamaki that he is improving. Continuing to fight Shinra and Arthur for five hours, the pair succeed with their training.

Ōbi's Rescue Arc:

Benimaru was aware that the 8th would attempt to rescue Akitaru from prison against the Tokyo Empire and White-Clad, so Konro had him disguise himself under the identity of "Moonlight Mask" so as to not become an enemy of them. Arriving at Fuchū Prison, he stopped White-Clad from finishing off Company 8, though Arrow was able to tell who he was from his attire. Beginning to attack the cultist with fire, he used his matoi to rescue Company 8. Accompanied by Joker, he continues to attack the group, during which he attacks Charon and Dragon before the pair fled with the brigade and their captain.

Upon returning to Asakusa, he has Company 7 lend aid to the wounded he brought with him. Ōbi thanked him, and Benimaru questioned what the situation they were facing was and what was happening with the empire. Discussing the issue with Ōbi and Konro, Ōbi confirmed Benimaru's suspicion that the Holy Sun Temple and the White-Clad had joined forces, resulting in Company 8 being excommunicated from the empire. The pair were also informed that Burns was killed by his demon doppelgänger.

Stone Pillar Arch:

When Shinra asks Konro how to perform an Adolla Link, he goes to Benimaru for some advice. Benimaru tells Shinra that there may be a way to connect the Evangelist. He tells Shinra that he must open his "Third Eye". Later, Benimaru is seen with Joker saying that the empire is up to something nasty.

Asakusa Showdown Arc:

Three months after the stone pillars began appearing, Benimaru is one of the pyrokinetics affected by the change in the world, having dreams that feel real about his master and his strict training. When Konro brings a drunken Benimaru inside, Benimaru thinks about whether he needs to get his act together and regrets never beating Hibachi. The next day, Captain Shinmon senses something on the horizon. When the seventh stone pillar appears in Sumida Bay, Benimaru initially plans to leave it alone only to be alerted to a demon floating above the bay. Realizing that this creature is identical to his adoptive father, Benimaru flies to the bay to fight alone. In the skies above Sumida Bay, Benimaru asks the doppelgänger why it is here. It replies that it is here to destroy everything and overwhelms Benimaru. The King of Destruction has to react to the attacks before being thrown into the sea. Benimaru realizes that Hibachi's attacks are endangering the civilians on the coast and has to stop him from using Red Sun in that direction. Benimaru is punished for his inability to use Sun Wheel properly.

As the battle grows more and more intense, the combined power of Benimaru and the demon causes the realm of Adolla to affect even the waves beneath them. Company 7 arrives and watches the fight between their two leaders and begins to celebrate the spectacle of the battle. Hibachi uses Moonlight to blind Benimaru before unleashing Red Sun from beneath his target. Despite the incredible power of the attack, Benimaru is able to use his second-generation abilities to survive completely unscathed. Benimaru eventually bows to the demon, vowing to never shame the name "Shinmon". Now ready to slay his master's doppelganger, Benimaru readies his perfected Sun Wheel. He then leaps out of his matoi and reveals that he has combined Hibachi's Sun Wheel with Konro's Crimson Moon for his own attack: Crimson Moon's Sun Wheel. Completely annihilated, the doppelganger finally praises Benimaru's strength.

Returning to shore, Benimaru and Konro discuss their master's intentions and hope that this was a spectacle worthy of him. Seeing Konro crying for the two, Benimaru tells his lieutenant that he will trust him, as his gaze at the end result of their attack on the horizon includes a second smiling moon appearing above them.
