Chemistry had never been your favorite subject.
To be fair, neither had school.*
You had a reputation for doing the bare minimum—turning in assignments late (if at all), sleeping through lectures, and somehow still managing to pass every semester. Teachers were used to it by now.
Luke, on the other hand, was your complete opposite.
Top of the class. Perfect grades. Always prepared. The kind of student teachers loved to praise.
As your chemistry teacher began assigning partners for the semester project, the room quickly filled with pairs... until only two students remained.
You.
And Luke.
A quiet groan escaped him the moment your names were called together.
"Ma'am... could I please work with someone else?" he asked, trying to keep his voice polite.
"No partner changes," the teacher replied without looking up from her papers. "Now sit down."
With that, the decision was final.
Each pair received a different topic and exactly one week to complete the project.
The final bell rang, and everyone began packing their things.
You had barely made it to the classroom door when someone tapped your shoulder.
Turning around, you found Luke standing behind you, his backpack slung over one shoulder. He hesitated for a second before speaking.
"...You'll actually do your part of the project... right?"
