The entity is a dark shadow of Dr. Ava Jansen, born in the Dark Aether at the same time as her due to their mother Samantha Maxis’ strong connection to the realm. Throughout her life, The Entity repeatedly attempted to reach out to her sister, but a full connection could not be made due to the dimensional barriers between their worlds. Jansen also began taking pills to suppress visions from The Entity.

When Viktor Zakhaev opened a dimensional breach within Zaravan, Urzikstan, the forces of the Dark Aether spread throughout the entire city. However, Jansen was able to contain this outbreak via The Neutralizer, which destroys any Aetherium around it. However, it also opened a portal to the Dark Aether, of which The Entity was able to emerge and pull all soldiers around her towards her, included Jansen. While the soldiers were killed, The Entity contacted Jansen, causing her to scream and pass out, awaking with no memory of what happened.

The Entity begins opening Dark Aether rifts, of which various Deadbolt Striketeams enter. In the first, The Entity speaks to them and has them power various alters. After they return to their home world, Jansen researches Project Janus and the Office of Requiem, the latter of which Deadbolt’s consultant Sergei Ravenov was apart of. The entity gives her a nightmare, and had her believe HQ had been taken over by zombies, she fights them, only for things to apparently return to normal as she kills Ravenov. She awakes, however, as the real Ravenov contacts her for debriefing

Jansen becomes angry at Ravenov for not telling her about previous Dark Aether incursion, and The Entity continues manipulating her, eventually convincing her to join her in the Dark Aether. Ravenov and a Strike Team chase after her. They find The Entity possessing Jansen, and break her free of her control. The Entity attempts to kill them, but they escape. Back at HQ, Ravenov shows Jansen a video from the late Dr. Elizabeth Grey, revealing the truth: while she carried and birthed her, her mother through surrogacy was Samantha Maxis, currently trapped in the Dark Aether and whose DNA, alongside Ravenov’s (without his consent) was used to create her, as Requiem was dying due to Dark Aether exposure and could not continue their work. Ravenov reveals The Entity is her Dark Shadow, and Jansen storms out for not revealing the truth.

Jansen eventually reconciles with Ravenov and convinces him to join her in a final rift to confront The Entity. A Strike Team joins them and finds various relics from Jansen’s childhood, the memories of which The Entity shares. Jansen cleanses these relics, freeing them of The Entity’s grip and severing their bond, she repeatedly begs her sister to stop, stating that forces in the realm want to harm her due to her power but Jansen refuses, as their shared bond puts her world at risk from the Dark Aether. After finding The Entity’s home, she decides to force her cooperation and kill Ravenov and the Strike Team, Jansen uses her powers to weaken her, and the team are able to attack her weak spots and destroy her. With her death, the Dark Aether forces begin pulling back into their own world, and the Zaravan outbreak ends shortly after.

After her death, a more powerful echo was spawned in the Dark Aether. When a Strike Team entered, it guided them with secret markings to it’s lair, where it attempted to kill them. However, the Strike Team were able to destroy it too.
