Although his stage image and music were dark and aggressive, those who knew him described Dead as an introverted, brooding person who was deeply involved in his art.

However, the deep melancholy and darkness that characterized Dead also manifested itself in his struggle with depression. He was a Satanist and quite perverse and morbid and was in a band called Mayhem as a vocalist.
