He is the only crew member who comes from the North Blue When he was still a child, Sanji was working as an apprentice cook on a luxury ship, when it was boarded by the terrible crew of Captain Zeff "Red Leg". During the boarding, Sanji fell into the water, losing consciousness; he was rescued by Zeff because the young Sanji shared his dream of finding the All Blue.

Sanji first appears in the series when Luffy arrives at Baratie Restaurant, the floating restaurant where Sanji was working as a cook while the rest of the crew continued on the Going Merry. Fullbody, a guest at the restaurant, attempts to show off his gallantry and is cut off by Sanji, who embarrasses him in front of his companion. Fullbody manages to get a fly into his soup and asks Sanji what the fly is doing there, to which Sanji replies that he doesn't know anything about bugs. This angers Fullbody, who destroys the table and spills all the food on it. Sanji then badly injures him for insulting a sea cook.

Sanji is a tall (standing 1'77 cm at the start of the series and 1'80 cm after the timeskip), thin man. Before the timeskip, he had his left eye permanently hidden by his blonde hair, and sporting a single eyebrow that spirals towards the side of his ear. After the two-year timeskip, Sanji covers his right eye and shows his left eye, with the eyebrow on that side spiraling towards the side of his nose. Initially he had a small goatee, after the timeskip he grew a thicker goatee and some mustache on his upper lip.

He usually wears very elegant suits, with a jacket, shirt, tie, long trousers and perfectly structured shoes, normally black, except for the shirt, which is casually changed in colour. But he is also capable of wearing other outfits depending on whether the climate or environment of the islands they visit requires it.

Sanji respects Luffy as a captain, but often gets angry at him for eating too much, for his poor hygiene in the dining room, or for wanting to eat the dishes he makes especially for Nami. He also dislikes it when Luffy imitates him, although he respects him as a leader and captain. He is constantly fighting both physically and verbally with Zoro (who continually calls him "Ero-Cook" (perverted cook), and Sanji calls Zoro "Marimo-san" (since Marimo is a green moss, a reference to Zoro's hair color), despite all their differences, they each respect the other for their fighting skills and have developed a rivalry in that regard. When fighting together against a common enemy, they are virtually invincible. However, despite their bickering and constant clashes, they both form a powerful duo when it comes to fighting enemies.

He is quite protective of the female members of the crew, which causes Nami to take advantage of this fact at times. Robin does not tend to actively take advantage of him, but receives the same affectionate treatment. He gets along fairly well with Usopp, although he occasionally hits him, Brook, and Luffy for imitating him or not acting maturely. Sanji initially wanted to cook Chopper, and sometimes refers to him as "Emergency Food" to annoy him. However, he considers Chopper a great friend and gives him and Usopp advice when they need it. He often gets angry with Brook for his bad habits with women, but they get along well when it comes to women. In short, he cares for his crew in the same way that each of the Straw Hat Pirates does.

Sanji had a habit of angering everyone at the Baratie, however he was on good terms with everyone and cried as much as his fellow cooks when he left to follow his dreams. The Baratie crew has kept abreast of Sanji's actions and ever since he became a wanted man, they use their wanted poster to advertise themselves as "the home of Black Leg Sanji".

Duval initially hated Sanji due to his resemblance to the sketch on the cook's wanted poster, which had caused sailors and bounty hunters to pursue him. However, after his defeat against him, Duval became his friend as Sanji fixed his face and made him handsome. Duval now calls Sanji "Young Master" and his help was crucial in rescuing Camie when she was kidnapped and was going to be sold into slavery.

When Sanji arrived at Okama Island by Bartholomew Kuma, he hated the Okamas and was chased by them all over the island to turn him into an Okama, there he met Emporio Ivankov, with whom he had some friction at first since Ivankov believed him to be a government spy even after Sanji explained to him that he is a member of Monkey D. Luffy's crew, he still helped Sanji with his two-year training. After finishing his training, all the Okamas said goodbye to him wishing that he would visit them in the future, but Sanji would make it clear to them that he would never return.

Sanji has supposedly made numerous enemies (especially during his stay at the Baratie). Fullbody in particular has a vendetta against him for the humiliation he suffered at the restaurant. In Thriller Bark he felt great contempt for Absalom because he ate a Devil Fruit that makes him invisible, which he would have liked to do so he could spy on women in the showers. Like all the Straw Hats, his enemies are the Navy, the World Government, other pirates and bounty hunters.

Sanji is the cook of Monkey D. Luffy's crew. His dream is to find the "All Blue", the sea where all the fish species of the four seas are found, and it is a paradise for any cook.

Like Zoro, Sanji is far more perceptive than he appears to be, and seems to pick up on things about situations that his other teammates miss. He's not afraid to show his emotions as soon as he feels them, and is capable of crying or losing his mind at any moment, even offering his own life to save his captain.

He is a hardened womanizer and pervert who constantly flirts with any beautiful woman he sees. Because of this, Zoro has given him several titles such as "Perverted Cook" or "Mr. Nosebleed" (after the timeskip). He even has the tendency to court a woman regardless of whether she is married, has openly rejected him or is hostile towards him. Upon meeting Nami, he falls madly in love with her and, upon meeting Nico Robin on the ship, he immediately accepted her. In fact, he was the first member to accept Robin (after Luffy). Despite this, Sanji is a gallant, as he has a strong sense of chivalry, which prevents him from hitting a woman even if she is an enemy of the crew. In addition, although he never admits it, he has great respect for his mentor Zeff and loves him like a father. This can be seen mostly during his stay at the Baratie Restaurant, where he did not hesitate to hit anyone who insulted or spoke ill of Zeff.

A peculiarity of Sanji is his fondness for tobacco, as it is difficult to see him without a cigarette in his mouth while his favorite drink is wine: just like Luffy drinks soda and Zoro drinks Sake, Sanji is a lover of top quality wine and has never been seen drinking any other type of drink.

Sanji is an egocentric who considers himself handsome, good-looking, and charming, often comparing himself to a prince from a fairy tale.

He tends to speak in somewhat rude language and calls everyone names, making him a rather peculiar character when it comes to language.

One of his most notable traits is the meticulousness with which he prepares his food. Since food is essential to existence, Sanji thinks that the job of a chef is sacred and scolds or beats up anyone who wastes food, steals it, or plays with it. In his childhood, when he was a waiter in a ship's kitchen, his pride and narcissism were also evident; despite being only an apprentice, he saw himself as a great chef and while the rest of the staff shared out the luxurious food left over from banquets, Sanji avoided it and demanded that it be thrown away like garbage even if it hadn't been touched, since he claimed that being a great chef, it was degrading for him to eat leftovers. However, after surviving almost three months of starvation with Zeff, he would develop an appreciation and respect for food and its preparation, ceasing to see it as a luxury and appreciating it as a necessity and pleasure that must be taken care of with care.
