In 1982, amidst growing tensions between the Warsaw Pact and NATO, NATO's "Crested Eagle" exercises in West Germany get out of hand. A simulated attack on Soviet troops in East Germany results in an unintended airstrike on a Soviet military base. The Warsaw Pact, interpreting this as an act of aggression, invades West Germany. Thus began a full-scale war.
