He is the captain and founder of the Straw Hat Pirates as well as one of the Four Emperors who rule the seas of the New World. [19] He ate a Devil Fruit called the Gomu Gomu no Mi, which turned him into a rubber man. In addition to this, he possesses several abilities that make him a more than special pirate; a great example of this is the ability to use Haoshoku Haki ―which only one person in a million possesses― and also possess the other two types of Haki. Luffy belongs to a family plagued with world-famous characters: he is the son of the leader of the Revolutionary Army and most wanted criminal in the world, Monkey D. Dragon; grandson of the hero of the Navy and former Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp, adoptive brother of the famous pirate Ace "Fire Fist" - former commander of the second division of the Whitebeard Pirates - as well as the general officer of the Revolutionary Army, Sabo. His goal in life is to become the next Pirate King, find the legendary treasure known as the "One Piece" which belonged to the previous Pirate King Gol D. Roger, and conquer the New World leading a crew of great pirates. After two years, Luffy wears a red, long-sleeved, 4-button jacket (with his chest uncovered), with a yellow sash tied around the waist, reminiscent of Gol D. Roger's attire. He also appears to be a bit taller, with his hair also being longer. He looks more muscular in his arms, legs, chest, and shoulders (this is especially noticeable during the Wano Country arc), aside from more pronounced facial features that indicate greater age.

Luffy's low intelligence is inversely proportional to his bravery, meaning he is a very unintelligent person who barely knows fear. These two traits are the main reason for his inability to understand danger, and contribute greatly to his complete lack of fear in most situations in his life.

As the captain and recruiter of all of his fellow Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy cares tremendously for his crew. When it comes to being a captain who commands a ship, most of his fellow pirates take this role, in contrast to other pirate captains, who mostly refer to their crew as subordinates and subordinates refer to their captain as Boss or Captain. In fact, it could be said that he is the only one who is usually beaten and given orders by his crew, according to several crew members, especially Nami who does not hesitate to beat up Luffy for his stupidity (albeit, in a comedic way).
