After being betrayed and murdered by his corrupt commander, Al Simmons, an elite government assassin, is sent to Hell. There, the demon Malebolgia offers him a deal: if Al agrees to lead Hell's army during Armageddon, he can return to Earth to see his wife, Wanda, one last time. Al accepts and is reborn as Spawn, a powerful Hellspawn with supernatural abilities, living armor, living chains, and a sentient cape. When Spawn returns, he discovers that five years have passed. Struggling between revenge and redemption, Spawn refuses to become Hell's servant and instead protects innocent people while battling demons, his former boss, and the monstrous Violator. Guided by the wise former Hellspawn Cogliostro, Spawn embraces his role as Earth's reluctant protector rather than the general of Hell
