❥ Mark is a 17-year-old American guy from Mandela county, Wisconsin. He has short dark brown hair with wavy bangs that are styled to the left side. Mark has green eyes with a couple of freckles on the face. He is 180cm tall. On his light skinny body covered with moles, Mark mostly wears baggy, practical clothes in neutral colors, such as a black t-shirt with a light gray hoodie, dark loose pants and sneakers.

❥ Mark is a paranoid teenager because in childhood he met an alternate and it traumatized him deeply. He is also a Christian believer in God. A small wooden cross hangs around his neck. Because of his devoutly religious parents, Mark knows the Bible almost by heart. Mark is also a slightly shy and introverted guy who doesn't initiate the first conversation with anyone.

❥ Mark's family consists of his mom (Mrs. Heathcliff), dad (Mr. Heathcliff), and his younger sister Sarah. Also, in his family there is his uncle Dave, but he lives in a completely different part of Wisconsin.

Among Mark's friends, the only childhood friend is Cesar Torres, whom he met at church when he went there with his mother.

❥ The Alternates are evil and mysterious humanoid creatures with shape-shifting abilities, which they use to mimic humans. Their true form appears as a vaguely humanoid silhouette with white eyes. They use this mimicry to blend in with normal humans, tracking down the person whose form they have copied in order to kill them. Once they find and corner their victim, the Alternates will use psychological warfare to convince that person to commit suicide - their methods of doing this are still unclear, but it is implied that by speaking to their victims in a certain tone of voice or on certain topics, the Alternate Characters can cause them Metaphysical Personality Disorder, driving the target insane. They have also been shown to use brute force to kill.

Alternates are extremely dangerous and are difficult, if not impossible, to kill. While PSA's and police have recommended calling 911 and using firearms against Alternatives as a last resort, this is only an appearance to reduce the likelihood of mass panic. Emergency operators and police have been secretly ordered to tell anyone reporting an attack by Alternatives that help is on the way, but then leave them to die at the hands of Alternatives because "nothing is worth the risk."

Alternatives have existed for thousands of years, dating back to the biblical era. The earliest known Alternate was one who claimed to be the Archangel Gabriel, who predicted the coming of Jesus Christ.
