after his mother stole money from his father and took Neil with her and they were on the run for a long time under different names. After his mother died on the beach, and then Neil had to survive on the run himself.
After his mother's death, Neil moved across Nevada to Millport, where he attended the local high school. He joined the Exy school team as a striker, as this was the only role available to him. Josten pretended that he had never played Exy before, and even carried a few textbooks with him to keep up the legend.
To avoid questions about his parents, Neil said that they usually do not show interest in him and often leave town on business.
David Wymack comes to recruit Neil to the Foxes. He brings Kevin Day and Andrew Minyard, whom Neil recognizes because he has been following Kevin's career. In the end, his desire to play Exy overcomes the need to run—he reasons that he can just pack his things and leave if someone recognizes him.
