Megumin is a girl who is 1.51 meters tall, with small breasts and a small bottom, short hair, and bangs that leave short strands in the front reaching her chin, and long strands in the back falling to her chest. Like all Crimson Demons, she has red eyes, and they have even been shown to glow in the dark in the anime (it is unknown whether this is a racial characteristic present in Crimson Demons or unique to her).

She wears a black cloak with yellow trim, and her witch's hat has a scarecrow-like face on it. She wears a red dress with yellow trim and a belt. She wears fingerless gloves and carries a wooden staff with which she casts her Explosion spell. She wears a bandage along her right leg and a black stocking on her left, and she wears soft brown leather boots. She wears a black necklace. She used to wear a red patch with a white cross and yellow trim over her left eye (which she claimed was a seal that, if removed, would cause a catastrophe).

Megumin is a straightforward girl who speaks in an archaic Japanese dialect. She's often very hyperactive and lively, and has chuunibyou tendencies like the other Crimson Demons. She's very intelligent, but lacks self-control, especially when it comes to using her explosion magic. She has no problem wasting her spell on empty plains or abandoned castles, as long as she can use one explosion a day.

Megumin is usually calm and cheerful, but she can easily become aggressive when she feels slighted or challenged. Kazuma says she's very noble and cares for her friends more than anyone. She hates being treated like a child just because of her appearance and gets upset when she's called a loli.

Explosive Magic: Megumin is absolutely obsessed with Explosive Magic. All of her training has been dedicated exclusively to improving her explosive power, shortening her chant, and being able to cast the spell without chanting it out loud. However, the severe mana drain, combined with the lack of mana enhancement points, has resulted in her always collapsing after activating the spell, leaving her completely immobile. Furthermore, her refusal to learn other skills makes her entirely reliant on her allies. Other mages capable of using Explosive Magic have been known to remain conscious after chanting it, know at least one other skill, and can fight alone if necessary.

Megumin's first and only chant is: "Darker than black, gloomier than darkness, combine with my deep crimson. The time has come to awaken, descend to these borders and appear as an intangible distortion. Dance, dance, dance! Let a destructive force flood my torrent of power, a destructive force without equal! Send all creation back to its source! Rise from your abyss! Mankind knows of no other offensive technique more powerful! It is the ultimate magical attack! Explosion!"
