Benito Mussolini, born on July 29, 1883, in Dovio di Predappio, Italy, was the son of a socialist blacksmith and a schoolteacher. Mussolini shifted to support Italian participation in World War I, leading to his expulsion from the Socialist Party. He established an authoritarian regime, emphasizing economic regulation, corporatism, and major infrastructure projects. Mussolini sought to revive Italy's greatness, invading Ethiopia in 1935 and aligning with Nazi Germany in 1939. His involvement in World War II, however, led to military defeats and a loss of support.
