Genya was a boy with a muscular body and considerable height, measuring 180 cm (5'11"). Being unable to use a breathing technique like the rest of the Hunters, he felt insecure with his abilities especially after seeing his older brother's negativity towards his desire to be part of the Demon Extermination Corps. [9]. After this event, he decided to participate in the Final Selection [4] in order to have the acceptance of his brother.

Genya's name, Genya (玄弥) means "Mysterious" (玄, Gen) and "so much more"/"more and more" (弥, Ya) while Shinazugawa means "Immortality" (不死, Shinazu) and "River "(川, Gawa).
