In the world of Girls und Panzer, the sport of tank battles is called Sensha-dō. The schools that participate are primarily girls' high schools that compete in regional and national tournaments. Each school has its own tank team, which varies in size and skills.

The school is located in the town of Ooarai in Ibaraki Prefecture, it is also the new school for the main protagonist Miho Nishizumi, the Sensha-do team that was inactive for years was revived by Anzu Kadotani because the school was facing financial difficulties due to the threat of closure, so she forces her to join the school team and later naming her as its leader since she is the only one with enough experience in Sensha-do. At first because Miho had suffered the humiliation she had experienced due to her team's defeat when she was at her previous school; Kuromorimine High School, she preferred to completely get away from Sensha-do, but thanks to the support of her new friends and pressure from the student council she decides to join the team. She gains the team's trust due to her decisive leadership, thanks to that Ooarai advances to the Sensha-do finals for the first time defeating the current champion: Kuromorimine High School.

Kuromorimine is based in Kumamoto City. However, since their school ship is too large to dock at any of the ports in Kumamoto Prefecture, they have to dock elsewhere.

Kuromorimine is the most well-known and respected school in the Sensha-d' high school, a reputation earned by its excellent standard of Sensha-d. The school adheres to the generational doctrine of the Nishizumi style, which, backed by a large arsenal of powerful tanks, ensures that it is recognised as the strongest and most prestigious of the Sensha-d schools.

As a result, the school is very focused on Sensha-da, to the point that the Sensha-da team is held in adoration by the other students. This emphasis creates a school environment that places great importance on the principles of justice, law-abiding conduct, persistence, and determination. However, it is also the strict and rigid doctrines of the Nishizumi style that translate into the classroom, creating a demanding, punitive, and high-pressure environment among the students that has only recently begun to change.

Although the school is universally respected for its strength, it is disliked by many of the other high schools for its rigid victory-oriented style and distinct lack of moralistic compromises, eventually culminating in the controversy over Miho Nishizumi's actions during the 62nd Sensha-d National High School Tournament.

Jatkosota High School is located in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan.

Jatkosota is a relatively isolated school that seems to interact little with other schools compared to its peers. This is because its individual tank teams are very independent and maintain minimal contact with their peers. Culturally, the students have a high level of resilience and enjoy solitude. However, they place a lot of importance on friendships, considering friends to be like family.

Drawing inspiration from Finnish tank models for his Sensha-dō line has left Jatkosota with very limited options. The small size of his school imposes strict financial limits on his arsenal, so students prefer to invest in upgrades to their existing tanks rather than buying new ones.

To acquire new vehicles, Jatkosota crews have a habit of stealing tanks from rivals and using them for themselves, often after having carried out the unthinkable modifications that are their speciality. This practice has led to (ongoing) disputes with other schools, and has further contributed to Jatkosota's pariah status. However, Jatkosota's image also includes a reputation for being fierce contenders on the battlefield, capable of taking on the major schools.

St. Gloriana is a school located in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. St. Gloriana is a wealthy and refined school with well-groomed students. They are known to consume tea and biscuits even during Sensha-dō battles.

It is a very famous and privileged school, with Sensha-dō being a major part of the school's culture. The school's Sensha-dō team is a serious threat on the field, however, it has traditionally been slightly weaker than the likes of Kuromorimine and Pravda, its key opponents. As a result of this, it has been a long time since the school last won the national championship.

Much of the school's funding comes from donations from alumni. This also means that the graduates end up influencing the selection of tanks, hence their conservative selection of tanks despite their wealth.

The school has a very strict selection process even for enrollment. Students aspire to be part of the "Tea Garden," the building where the best of the best students in terms of grades and behavior gather. These elite students enjoy the trust of everyone and are given tea soul names.

After graduation, Tea Garden members join one of three major factions of alumni organizations, and hold regular meetings to oversee how their school should be run, especially regarding how the next generation of Sensha-dō leaders should be chosen.

St. Gloriana is known to occasionally host tea parties for highly respected companions. She also has a tradition of offering tea as a gift to opponents, usually individuals, whom she deems worthy.

St. Gloriana has a kind of Intelligence Department called GI6 (General Information Department 6). All members drink coffee, meet in the cafeteria and are named after famous British authors.

The team's members are recruited from universities across Japan, usually from elite national, public, and private schools such as "T-dai" (Tokyo University), "K-dai" (Keio University) or "O-dai" (Osaka University). While on the team they undergo rigorous training, preparing them to be integrated into various professional teams once they graduate. Their current commander is Alice Shimada, the heir to the house of the Shimada style, which is a rival to the Nishizumi house.

They have a unique range of vehicles at their disposal ranging from Shermans and Panthers to large siege guns and super heavy tank destroyers. During the annihilation match, however, the majority of their tanks were tanks that would later see action in service of the United Nations during the Korean War.

The team attend their meetings and Sensha-dō trainings at one location somewhere in Tokyo.

As an official member of the Sensha-dō Federation, the team has access to high funding, sophisticated equipment and high priority with respect to Sensha-dō training and provision. They frequently display the logo of the Sensha-dō Federation alongside their team insignia.

The team is known to engage in exhibition matches with other institutions, such as the adult professional teams or, in one particular known case, a local high school.

Chi-Ha-Tan Academy is based in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

The school has links with local school-ship construction. The school was sandwiched between a rural area, which focused on breeding fine horses, and the industrial heartland, which included concentrated metalworks. The school has a fine archery and Naginata tradition, done on horseback.

Like many of the other Sensha-dō schools, Chi-Ha-Tan moved into tank driving after WW1 ended, and they started driving tanks Japan made themselves. The first instructors were WW1 veteran tank drivers.

The school once had a respectable Sensha-dō team, at the height of its prowess it even reached the finals. Recently, however, they have been repeatedly crushed in the first round. This defeat came in spite their did to improve their tank's performance, as the improvement focused more on equipment upgrades and less on training the students operating it.

The school culturally ended up with girls with strong maternal instincts. The school has a huge library that is renowned in the country, and students even publish their own books. And as mentioned earlier, they still have a fine equestrian tradition.
