As a person, Lu Jitsu is a tall and thin Asian with black hair, black eyes, and fair skin.

As a mutant, Splinter is a short, chubby mutant rat with gray fur as well as white ear fur, white hair with a section tied in a top bun, white bushy eyebrows, and a goatee for a compliment. He has golden-yellow eyes, a red-pink nose, black whiskers on his cheeks, pink hands and feet (he has five fingers instead of the usual four), and a small teardrop on his right ear. Splinter wears a black scrunchie to hold his gray hair in place, a brown yukata with orange trim and red lotus flowers.

Splinter, unlike his previous incarnations, is laid-back and very lazy, as he often sits on a chair. He is distracted and worried when remembering the names of his sons, and even calls them by the colors of their masks. He also causes mayhem and trouble with his sons, including stealing the Turtle Tank in "Fasting and Passing". However, as shown in "The Evil League of Mutants", Splinter cares deeply about his sons and their safety. when he needs to act when necessary, such as in episodes such as "Origami Tsunami" and "Mrs. Cuddles". Splinter was also shown to slowly become more serious throughout the first season. He cares deeply about the Turtles' safety, and as a result, he is sometimes strict. Although his first on-screen training consisted of watching a Lou Jitsu tape (which, with a later revelation, was actually a video of him), Splinter takes training the turtles to improve their fighting skills very seriously.
