In his introduction, Giyu appears as a young adult of approximately 19 years old. He is of average height, with fair skin, long black hair tied back in a ponytail that reaches his lower back, and sapphire-blue eyes. His characteristic attire consists of the standard uniform of the Demon Slayer Corps, which is slightly tinted blue. He also wears a haori divided[3] into two colors: one red[4], which belonged to his sister[5], and one with geometric patterns[3] in green, orange, and yellow[4]; this latter pattern is a reminder of his friendship with Sabito[6].

Giyu has a reserved personality and always wears a serious expression on his face. He is shown to have a strong sense of justice with no tolerance for those who don't know their own limitations and waste their lives. Despite having a deep hatred towards Demons and never hesitating to kill one, he was able to go against the rules of the Demon Slaying Corps by protecting Nezuko Kamado upon realizing that she might be different from other Demons[9] and even agreed to sacrifice his life for her and her brother Tanjiro Kamado's sake by committing sepukku if she ate a human[10]. This implied that he did not completely despise Demons like the rest did[11], and was willing to make an exception by letting them[12] live if they didn't kill or eat humans[13] showing in turn that he was the most pragamatic when dealing with Demons instead of hating them like the rest of the Hunters did.

He was someone who didn't talk much and seemed to have trouble interacting with others, which led him to keep his distance from his comrades.[14] This caused him to develop a kind of complex about what others thought of him, and he refused to believe that he was hated, as Shinobu Kochō claimed.[15] After having the opportunity to interact with those around him, he wished he could improve his relationship with the other Pillars.

His distant attitude stemmed from a deep-seated inferiority complex he developed after participating in the Final Selection, which made him more severe; this affected him to the point of wanting to abandon his position as the Water Pillar. He came to his senses after Tanjiro Kamado explained that he shouldn't live with the guilt of being a survivor, but rather live for the people who sacrificed their lives for him.
