Role in history:

Sugimoto is the protagonist of Golden Kamuy. He is a veteran of the Russo-Japanese War who embarks on a quest to find a treasure hidden by the Ainu. On his journey, he meets a young Ainu girl named Asirpa, who helps him decipher her father's tattoos that contain clues to the location of the treasure.

Throughout the story, Sugimoto faces numerous challenges, including other treasure hunters, corrupt soldiers, and wild animals. However, thanks to his tenacity, survival skills, and loyalty to his friends, he manages to overcome each obstacle and get closer and closer to the treasure.

Sugimoto is a muscular, brown-eyed Japanese man with spiky brown hair that he usually wears covered by a military cap. His most prominent feature must be his facial scars: two of them are parallel and run vertically across his cheeks, while the third runs horizontally like a tree branch. Sugimoto's entire body is also covered in deep scars and wounds he received in battle. His countenance is typically serious and mature. Throughout the year, Sugimoto wears an olive-colored kimono with the sleeves tied with a tasuki sash and the back hem tucked in shirihashori style over a mandarin-collared shirt. He also wears military pants and high boots that were part of his uniform during the Russo-Japanese War. However, the boots he wears were snatched from the officer he nearly beat to death. [3] In colder weather, he also wears a dark blue trench coat and a foreign-made scarf he purchased in Otaru. [4]Following the events of the Abashiri Prison Invasion, Sugimoto wore a metal plate covering the head wound inflicted on him by Ogata. He also wore a brace on his left leg after he was injured by Nikaidou at Abashiri; he stopped wearing it after returning to Hokkaido.

Sugimoto is a kind and brave man. Despite appearing gruff on the outside, he is a caring person who cares greatly for his friends and loved ones. As his father would say, Sugimoto is someone who "always ends up stuck in the worst roles", meaning he would risk his life to help others. [5] His dedication to his first love, Umeko, and the promise he made to his late best friend, Toraji, are the driving forces that lead him to seek out the gold in the first place. Later, he would often selflessly put himself in danger to protect Asirpa. Though he often gets into fights, Sugimoto is quick to forgive others and helps even those who have wronged him in the past. Having been shunned in his village, Sugimoto knows firsthand what it's like to be looked down upon. Because of this, he nips in the bud any attempts to humiliate another by using unfair offensive terms. Sugimoto's most important characteristic is his survival instinct. His unfailing determination allows him to survive no matter the odds. When his father was dying of tuberculosis, Sugimoto decided that he would not give in to the disease. It is likely that his willpower saved him from contracting the disease. Despite all that, Sugimoto is still often naive and sometimes even childish. He joins Asirpa in her endeavors, such as acting in a film about Ainu folk stories or entertaining the children at the kotan. Sugimoto cares deeply for Asirpa and considers her his companion and friend. He wants to protect her and help her achieve her goal. At the same time, Sugimoto can be quite impulsive in his attempts to protect others: after being shot in the head by Ogata, Sugimoto suffered brain damage that made him more reckless and easily angered. If Sugimoto suffers too much abuse, he enters a berserker-like state when he is no longer in control of his actions.

However, he may come back to his senses when his body undergoes a drastic change, such as experiencing an instant drop in temperature.
