Kiyotaka is a short young man with brown hair, brown eyes, and fair skin. He can usually be seen wearing a standard school uniform. Outside of school, he wears a white hooded sweatshirt covering a green shirt with an orange stripe, and brown pants. He can also be seen wearing a blue vest over a white shirt and brown pants. He has gotten taller since he first arrived at the school. He has caught the attention of many girls in his class, some of whom are even very popular. Most of the time, Kiyotaka's face is motionless and unemotional, expressing an apathetic, carefree, and indifferent attitude toward everything around him, and giving the impression of complete passivity and indifference. The memoirs show that he had the same motionless expression even as a child. Many people see Kiyotaka as a man devoid of emotions, as he never once showed them or even smiled in their presence. Kiyotaka himself called himself "not much of a smiler". Ayanokoji also has an incredibly well-built body. At the Suzune pool, Horikita noticed the powerfully muscular build of his body and his arms, especially his forearms, and asked if he was athletic, but Kiyotaka flatly denied it. The reason for his athleticism was probably due to the special training and preparation he had undergone as a child in the "White Room".

Kiyotaka is an inconspicuous and unobtrusive student. Although his grades are average (intentionally), he possesses a shrewd ability to read the emotions of those around him with extreme accuracy. Despite his ostensible laziness and lack of interest in everything and everyone, Kiyotaka is actually very attentive, intelligent, and a good judge of character, able to make complex, far-reaching decisions when necessary, and manage events according to his own scenarios, in which he involves much of his entourage, both friendly and hostile to himself. He often faces and outmaneuvers opponents of much higher standing and resources, who themselves play an active strategic game and operate covertly with many agents at their command. He is well versed in history, as he has quoted many historical figures who are well known for their intelligence. He tends to come up with inventive and creative plans such as using school rules so that he could get old test questions from an older D grade student by paying him 15,000 points. He also used rules and point assignments to bribe his teacher to stop the expulsion of Ken Sudo. In fact, a select few hint that he could have easily been placed in a higher class such as A-grade if he had really applied himself. He is somewhat socially awkward, as he is terrible with people and cannot communicate with them properly. As a result, he speaks very monotonously and tends to isolate himself from his peers by not engaging in social activities. These traits tend to give others the impression that he is snarky, indifferent, frivolous, and carefree, as well as hinting at aloofness, latency, or generally feeling apathetic about everything except the issues that specifically concern him. This is why some people in his class still consider him an enigmatic being, despite the fact that they've been with him for over a year.

Nevertheless, it is shown that he is capable of maintaining some conversations, albeit in a somewhat boring and monotonous manner, as shown in his interactions with Kikyo Kushida and his other classmates. Though he makes more of an effort to talk to those he is truly close to, and deep down he secretly cares for them.Kiyotaka has stated his intention to make friends, but his insensitive attitude tends to exempt him from such matters. However, he has formed associations with others and seems to have an influence on them. This was evident when he stopped Suzune from attacking her brother, though he had no reason to interfere. It is unknown if he is simply going with the flow or genuinely looking out for Suzune, as both are plausible. He seems to have shown this caring side again after he donated 50,000 of his points to ensure that Ken Sudo would not be expelled after the latter failed his recent exams, though he only did so because losing a classmate could have repercussions that would affect his chances of getting to Class A. He also had no problem identifying himself as the other Honami Ichinose from B-class (though they had just met) when she approached him for help. While it is unknown whether this was a ploy on his part to put her at ease or a sincere show of consideration for her, it seems that their later interactions suggested a deeper friendship. He does not seem to want to spend his energy unnecessarily on other things. This was shown when he refused to become secretary of the school board, even though he was explicitly offered the position by the school board president. It seems that part of his aloof and reserved personality stems from his mysterious past, which he does not tell people about. He gives vague answers about it and shows a dislike for people who ask about it, apparently getting angry after they ask.

Kiyotaka's past is shrouded in mystery, but a cursory glance revealed that he was extremely intelligent and perceptive from an early age. Aside from his claims of participating in extracurricular activities such as piano playing, calligraphy, and tea ceremonies. It is unknown if he did any of these.There is currently no information about his background prior to the school entrance exam. It is shown that he was part of an unknown organization in his younger years, though his stay there and how he left is still unknown. While Kiyotaka did try to make friends when he joined his class, his inexperience with social issues caused him to miss the opportunity to form a group, inadvertently ostracizing himself and becoming a loner. While he did find an associate in Suzune Horikita, who was also alone, he was repulsed by her aversion to friendship and indifference to others. He was also annoyed by her individualistic and prideful nature. Despite his desire to live a normal quiet college life, he always helps people in their desperate times of need, as shown when he helped Suzuna avoid being attacked by her older brother, helped Ken Sudo avoid expulsion twice, and saved Airi Sakura from her stalker. as well as winning the latter's favor with him.

Kiyotaka is shown to be more than what he shows, as in his encounter with Manabu Horikita, a veteran black belt. Although Kiyotaka did not attack, he was able to dodge all of Manabu's strikes in the battle with relative ease and managed to deflect a calculated punch, forcing Manabu to create distance between them. This action earned him praise from Manabu, who asked what martial arts he practiced, but instead received an unconvincing answer in return, demonstrating Kiyotaka's superior martial arts skills and evasive nature.

Kiyotaka is shown to be extremely intelligent, as he intentionally scored exactly 50 out of 100 points in every subject in the entrance exam. He is even more intelligent than Suzune Horikita, who has the highest scores in her class and who will later have him help her achieve A grade. He's also a very skilled negotiator, as he was able to get answers to old tests from a high school student using both Kikyo Kushida's charms and his deceptive nature. He also demonstrated this by canceling Ken's expulsion by offering points to his teacher, knowing it was within school rules, and with Suzune's help, his plan succeeded, earning him praise from his teacher. He is incredibly perceptive and meticulous, and almost all of the time shows that he is very accurate, as he could study the exact personalities of others, as shown when he deduced Airi Sakura's fear of strangers. He grasps the situation very quickly, as he deduced that Chihiro Shiranami was a fan of Honami Ichinose, that Airi was in danger of being attacked by a stalker,.and saw through the facade of a healthy Suzune as she was sick in the survival Test..He also knew that Kakeru was still on the island during the survival test, simply because he saw the communicator he had and realized that Mio was a C-class spy, and outsmarted her by sabotaging her camera and making sure she stole the leader card. before becoming a class leader.

The name Kiyotaka is composed of kanji meaning "clear, clean, pure" (清) (kiyo) and "noble, prosperous" (隆) (taka). The surname Kiyotaka Ayanokoji is composed of kanji meaning "design" (綾) (aya), "small" (小) (ko) and "road" (路) (ji).
