Thranduil was possibly born in Doriath during the First Age of the Sun. After the fall of the kingdom and the flooding of Beleriand, Thranduil and his father Oropher retired to Lindon, where they remained for a few years before heading east and founding a colony. Sindar in the Green Forest, which would become the Forest Kingdom.

Thranduil led wood elf forces in the final attack on Barad-dûr, in the War of the Last Alliance alongside Oropher. After this he was crowned king (since his father died in the battle of the Last Alliance) of the Greenwood. His wife is unknown, but his son was Legolas, a member of the Fellowship of the Ring.

In the middle of the Third Age, Sauron settled in the southern forest, which was contaminated by his influence and was renamed Mirkwood. Threatened by the evil creatures that now infested the forest, Thranduil and his people retreated north where they founded a new capital.
