Akutagawa has a slender build, a slightly feminine body shape, and very pale skin. He often covers his face with his hand because he coughs. He has short, black hair. Two longer strands frame the sides of his face. Closer to the tips, they change their color from black to dirty white. The bangs are short and almost completely open the forehead. Akutagawa has narrow gray eyes. He rarely smiles, which gives the impression of an eternally gloomy person. He wears a long shirt with three layers at the bottom, which he wears over tapered black trousers. Each layer has a wide cut, which creates a “valanche” effect. He wears a white frill over the neck of his shirt. The sleeves of the shirt are lace and are visible under the sleeves of the long black coat with a high, stand-up collar that Akutagawa wears over the top. Because Akutagawa does not tie the belt, it constantly hangs down the back and sides. On his feet he wears black, classic low-heeled shoes.

Akutagawa has a peculiar "survival of the fittest" view of the world, arguing that weak people must die and make way for stronger ones. He is not afraid of pain and defeat, just to hear a word of praise from Dazai. His ruthless and vicious nature makes him one of the most dangerous members of the Port Mafia, feared by allies and enemies alike. Much of the obedience from the subordinates of the Black Lizards (Name of the Port Mafia hit squad) largely stems from fear of his hot temper and general intolerance of incompetence. The self-titled "Dog" of the Port Mafia, Akutagawa demonstrates a willingness to carry out brutal orders and assignments to further not only the goals of the Mafia, but also his own interests. Ruthless and harsh, Ryunosuke is unquestioningly willing to kill anyone, including innocent civilians or children. He is hostile towards the weak, but does not like pointless torture, preferring to kill outright when possible. As brutal as he can be, Akutagawa generally takes a reserved and more distant approach. In relation to his subordinates and superiors, he equally behaves aloof, keeping his distance from possible interactions whenever possible. However, his composure is quite fragile. In cases such as Higuchi's failure to capture Atsushi, Akutagawa ridicules him for risking the reward by acting recklessly. This hot temper gets in the way of his ability to complete tasks from time to time.

At the center of this anger is his past as an orphan in the harsh slums of Yokohama. Akutagawa's gloomy worldview has not changed since then. The only thing that changed in his life was meeting Dazai when he was 14 years old, at a time when Ryunosuke was ready to kill a group of illegal traders responsible for the death of his comrades. This meeting radically changes Akutagawa - he shows respect for someone else. Even after Osamu's rather extreme and brutal training, Akutagawa never deviates from his own philosophy. Upon learning of Dazai's high opinion of Sakunosuke, Akutagawa feels insulted, because Oda was not only a lower rank, but also one of the few who refused to kill on the orders of the Mafia. On top of that, Dazai's flight further aggravates Ryunosuke's state of mind, leaving a constant feeling of inferiority in his subconscious, regardless of what he has achieved in the Mafia. However, Akutagawa still strives to gain Dazai's approval. Nevertheless, he believes that Dazai's current image is disgraceful compared to his former reputation, which he earned for himself while in the Port Mafia. Akutagawa's desire to gain Dazai's approval inevitably leads to strong resentment towards his new "student" Atsushi. Having first met Atsushi at a time when he was mentally weak, easily frightened and frozen in the face of danger, Akutagawa dismisses him as just another weak person destined to die for the sake of those who are stronger. Although Atsushi's transformation into a tiger leaves him momentarily taken aback, Akutagawa nevertheless sees nothing special in the guy. His opinion of Nakajima worsens when Dazai brags about him while simultaneously understating Akutagawa's worth as a former student. Most of the time he couldn't understand the importance others placed on Atsushi.

Nakajima is a walking paradox for Akutagawa - weak, but acting stronger than he really is, for the sake of a place in the world and permission to live, despite the fact that he is already valued by others. This deeply contradicts Akutagawa's self-perception. Others consider him powerful, but Akutagawa does not recognize his strength as a result of his own philosophy. This leads to a clash of opposites - Atsushi condemns himself for trying to gain everyone's approval, while Akutagawa himself acts almost entirely to gain Dazai's approval.

Despite all his rage, bitterness and hostility towards humanity and the world itself, Akutagawa also has positive qualities. He has a fairly friendly and warm relationship with his younger sister Gin, to the point that he helps her with everything. After Higuchi and the Lizards rescue him, he apologizes to her for causing trouble. While these are small, brief moments of Akutagawa's calmer, more serious side, they nonetheless mean a lot. Apparently Akutagawa rarely or never lies, which makes him honest, even if most of the time it is cruel and inappropriate.

Rashomon is the ability of Ryunosuke Akutagawa to transform his cloak, as well as any other clothing, into space-consuming matter. In addition to cutting through space, Rashomon's strips of fabric can transform into extremely sharp blades that can be used to block blows and then grab a target. In addition, Rashomon is able to combine with Atsushi's Moonlight Beast ability. His ability also comes in a form called "Rashomon Armor", which looks like a tight-fitting suit made of ribbons of fabric. This armor protects him from damage and also strengthens his body, giving him extra agility and striking power.
