Grom doesn't remember exactly how he met Ash, but he definitely knows that initially they both disliked each other. Ash seemed to him too aggressive and cruel. It was only after several months of working together and talking out of boredom that they first became good acquaintances, and then friends.
The connection was established after understanding why each of them behaves the way they do and how they treat each other better. This helped Grom to get rid of past nervousness and partially passive behavior. And Ash, on the contrary, seemed to have learned to be more patient before he was taken out.
