He was once the feared “demon” vice commander of the Shinsengumi, an elite Japanese police force that patrolled the imperial capital of Kyoto in the nineteenth century. His pledge to protect the Tokugawa regime eventually cost him his life at the Battle of Hakodate, the final battle of the Boshin War, where he was shot to death from behind near the Ippongi Kanmon while leading his fellow officers on horseback. As an End, Hijikata can manifest ghostly images of his former comrades to cut down his enemies.

Hijikata was once said to be taller than the average Japanese person, and was very handsome. With shoulder-length black hair and steel-gray eyes, his face constantly holds a stoic and grim appearance. He had medium length black hair with a middle part, his hair was a bit wavy. He had fair skin and his outfit was black, he also had a black blazer and a sword on his left hip.

Hijikata is cold-blooded and will follow through with any orders given to him by the Black King without a second thought. Though usually calm, with a neutral expression upon his face, Hijikata is known to fall into fits of anger when facing those who incite rebellion against the Black King. When angered, his rage seems to match Joan's. When he is in a casual situation, he is very stoic and boring, even with someone he loves.

He has the ability to summon an army of his fallen comrades from within the Shinsengumi in spectral form, he is also an accomplished master swordsman with minimal knowledge of hand-to-hand combat. Once holding the position as vice commander of the elite police, Hijikata holds great leadership skills as well as being a good tactician in the battlefield.
