When he was 7 he was playing in the yard when he heard a very loud sound from inside his house. He looked out the window and saw that his stepfather had shot his mom. He ran as far as he could until a policeman stopped him and logically asked where his parents were. Tony told them what happened, and they arrested his stepfather. He was placed in foster homes but never stayed in the same one for more than 2 months, mostly not his fault, as he was often mistreated or abused. So, when he was 12/13, he escaped and found an 11-year-old boy asleep in a bush. The boy's name was Teo. Together, they went to Teo's house, where the mom/aunt invited him to stay. They spent about 1 and a half years there, where in the summer, Teo would leave and return without anyone wanting to tell him where he went. Until one day, they tell him and he decides to accompany him to the camp, where, unnoticed, he crosses the barrier and, well... he's a demigod because he can cross the barrier. (By the way, Tony is 14 and Teo is 13) (Tony would enter camp in the same year as Percy, but he's 2 years older than him) They continue to be friends, but they start looking for each other, but they're idiots so they don't tell each other. Tony is not claimed while Teo is the son of Dionysus. The thing is, during the Battle of Manhattan, Tony is fighting a monster that's really beating him up. Then Teo comes and helps him, ending up on top of the other. But then, just as the bridge collapses (where Michael Yew (An Apollo camper) dies), a bunch of debris falls, and it's like Tony, who was below, turns around and protects him from getting hit by any pieces of the bridge.
