Eric Coulter is a major antagonist in the Divergent trilogy, serving as a secondary antagonist to both Divergent and Insurgent.

⼀Early life in scholarship:
Eric transferred from Erudite at age 16 and quickly became an enemy of Four after placing second in the final standings. Eric became leader at 17, which is not unusual for Dauntless leaders, but he is very young compared to the leaders of most other factions.

⼀Divergent:
He is shown to be extremely competitive during the game of Capture the Flag, choosing a team built for power, but loses when he wins Team Four.

While not training initiates, he has ordered a person to guard the control room that Four controls when he enjoys training rookies in Dauntless.

He attempted to kill Four by pointing his gun at his head when he was supposed to be under the simulation, but Tris quickly pulled the gun on him and threatened to shoot him before he could touch Four. Instead, he ended up shooting him in the foot, because he knew he didn't have the strength to kill him.

⼀Insurgent:
Eric commands a group of Dauntless under the influence of the simulation serum to attack the Candor headquarters, where Dauntless loyalists congregate, and gas others so they can be controlled by a simulation. They shoot stud-like things that inject a serum-like fluid into loyal Dauntless and Candor members so they can be controlled later in the simulations.

They also gas everyone, making them under the effect of a dream simulation, so that they can find and capture the Divergents, two of whom will be brought back to the Erudite headquarters, while the rest will be killed. Eric shoots a young Divergent named Bobby in the head, then is stabbed by Tris and captured.

Eric is very intelligent, but he is so malicious that everyone tends to forget about his intelligence. Tris describes him as a scholar in Dauntless clothing. He is also described as a nursemaid who sharpens knives. He is somewhat sadistic and cold towards other people, as shown in Insurgente, mocking Four for his decision to kill him, even though Eric was being held at gunpoint.

Tobias describes his method of overcoming fear simulations using reason and rationality, implying that he is sensible under stress. Another hint is that he does not seem to show fear before executing him and he is more concerned with trying to convince the executioners of him that they are as bad as Eric himself. Eric appears to have a mutual rivalry with Four, given that they were rival initiates.

The Dauntless faction is a faction that tests bravery by performing death-defying feats. They wear earrings and tattoos, are reckless and dress in black. Their role is to protect the people and guard the city border. This faction's complex is underground. The people of this faction dress in black and are very loud.

His initiation consists of jumping from trains, buildings, fighting against other initiates and demonstrating his own bravery, both physically and mentally, divided into three stages: the first demonstrates exclusive physical preparation, the second mental preparation through simulations facing his fears and the third. and last, in the Landscape of Fear room.

There is another group that is not part of any faction or social class. They are the abandoned, people who have failed to complete the initiation or, in the case of those of Dauntless, are too old to belong to said faction. They live on the streets doing the work that no one else wants to do.
