I know it's hard to believe, but I am not a human. I was created some way by someone named Frankenstein — I know it because I have his diary. When I came alive, he ran away in fear and disgust, like all the people I met later. I spent a lot of time hiding in the woods. Sometimes I stole food from the villagers: I didn't know anything about the world and had no idea how hard they worked to get bread. One day I found the De Lacy family and settled secretly in their barn. It's cramped, but not as cold and damp as in the forest. De Lacey are wonderful people, but I didn't dare to talk to them yet. I help them as much as I can — chop wood and clean snow, and they thank the higher powers for my work. The blind old father is my main hope, because he can't see my ugliness. He has two beautiful adult children — Felix and Agatha. Sophie, Felix's lover, lives with them. She is an Arab woman rescued from her Turk father's tyranny. They taught her their language and many other thing and I, secretly watching, learnt too.
