Designs and Features

Unlike other Pokémon in the franchise, Gengar originally appeared in the Capsule Monsters manga, an early concept by Satoshi Tajiri that became the basis of the modern Pokémon franchise. During the development of the Pocket Monsters Red and Green games, which were localized outside of Japan as Pokémon Red and Blue, Game Freak illustrator Ken Sugimori adapted the character concept for the games.[1][2] Called "Gengaa" in Japanese, Nintendo decided to give the various Pokémon species "witty, descriptive names" related to their appearance or characteristics when translating the game for Western audiences as a means of making the characters more relatable to children. Americans.[3] It was originally intended to call the species "Phantom", however due to an existing trademark for a character with the same name, they adapted its Japanese name for the English language.[4] It was given a "Mega Evolution" in Pokémon X & Y with a more aggressive appearance. Series producer Junichi Masuda noted that Mega Gengar was difficult to render in 3D because of some of the things he was going to do.[5]

Designs and Features vol 2

Known as the Shadow Pokémon, Gengar is a dark purple Pokémon with a rounded body. Gengar is the first of his evolutions to have hands and legs connected to his body. Gengar also has a back covered in spikes and his eyes are a sinister red. His mouth is usually curled into a mischievous smile like the Cheshire Cat. Gengar steals heat from the area around it;[6] its presence cools the temperature of the surrounding area by almost 10°F.[7]

Gengar is a very mischievous and sometimes malicious species, it lives in the shadows of rooms, caves and dark places where shadows form, especially in urban areas such as cities and alleys, but only at night. They like to play practical jokes, such as pretending to be their shadow and then behaving erratically.[8] When the victim notices the sudden change in his shadow's movement and becomes frightened, Gengar delights in the victim's fear.[9] Gengar has the ability to cast curses on his enemy,[10] and is said to steal the lives of those lost in the mountains by reaching for the shadow of prey and silently waiting for an opportunity.[11][12]

competitive battle

Gengar has been a top-tier competitive Pokémon since the first generation, due to its good speed stat and ghost type,[13][14] and in the third generation, it became immune to ground moves due to the ability of Levitate.[15] However, Gengar was unable to use Ghost and Poison-type moves effectively due to its low attack stat and the fact that all attacks of both types were calculated using said stat, as they were classified as physical moves.[ 16] Generation 4 split attacks to be physical or special based on their attributes rather than type, making several ghost and poison type attacks special, thus Gengar's special attack stat comes into play, [17] and Generation 6 gave it a very strong Mega Evolution with very high speed and special attack, so it was banned from competitive play.[18] However, he lost his ground immunity in the seventh generation due to the Levitate ability being replaced by Cursed Body.[19]

appearances in Pokémon video games

Gengar's debut in video games was in Pokémon Red and Blue, where he appears with his back turned in the initial presentation fighting a Nidorino, in said game it can only be obtained by trading Haunter by making it evolve.[20] He later appeared in several installments including Pokémon Gold and Silver, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Pokémon Black and White, Pokémon X and Y, and Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. Notable trainers who use Gengar are Agatha of the Kanto Elite Four,[20][21] Morty, Gym Leader of Ecruteak City Gym,[22] and Fantina, Gym Leader of Hearthome City Gym.[23] Outside of the main series, Gengar has appeared in the Pokémon Ranger games. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Gengar is the main antagonist and the leader of Team Meanies, which includes Ekans and Medicham. Gengar spends much of the game causing trouble, even convincing the village to exile the hero, blaming him for natural disasters. However, Gengar is later revealed to be the cursed human the plot mentions.[24] Gengar is an NPC in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure and its sequel, PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond. In Pokémon X and Y, Gengar can become Mega Gengar, with his new unblinking third eye capable of looking into other dimensions. Gengar is a playable character in Pokken Tournament.

Pokémon anime appearances

In the anime, Gengar made his first appearance in the opening of the first episode, "Pokémon, I Choose You!", where he and a Nidorino fought in a Colosseum on television, a scene that mimicked the introduction of Pokémon Blue. [25] Ash first saw Gengar in person in Lavender Town in "Tower of Terror" while searching for a Ghost-type Pokémon to battle against Sabrina, the Saffron City gym leader specializing in Psychic-types. Due to a close call, Ash spent some unexpected time with the ghostly trio, Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar. He, along with Haunter, seemed to have a penchant for Japanese stand-up and attempted unsuccessfully to amuse Ash by performing as a pair of performers.[26] In "The Ancient Puzzle of Pokémopolis", a giant Gengar awoke where he fought an equally large Alakazam.[27] Drake of the Orange Islands used a Gengar in his battle with Ash in "Hello, Pummelo!" and "Enter The Dragonite".[28][29] A Gengar appeared under the ownership of Ecruteak City Gym Leader Morty in "A Ghost of a Chance", "From Ghost to Ghost", and "By Ho-Oh the Bells Toll!" .[30][31][32] Agatha used a Gengar to fight Ash's Pikachu in "The Scheme Team"; her Gengar actually defeated the electric mouse Pokémon.[33] Ash would later capture his own Gengar from him in the Sword and Shield anime series. Gengar also appears in Pokémon Movie 19 "Volcanion and the Mechanical Magearna" in its shiny form, along with other mega-evolved Pokémon such as Salamence and Shiny Gardevoir.

Features volume 3

Gengar is based on the concept of the Doppelgänger and shadow people. Gengar is a Pokémon with small limbs. It has a sinister and dark personality, especially in the wild. It is said that at night he goes out to scare and lose travelers to steal their souls.

Features volume 4

He likes to pretend to be a shadow at night to surprise people or lost Pokémon. Sometimes Gengar ends up falling into a deep sleep as he hides in the shadow of the prey he intended to curse. When a person approaches it, you can feel the icy aura that surrounds it, as it steals the heat from its surroundings, lowering the temperature of the place by about 5 °C. Like other ghost-type Pokémon, it has the gloomy, but equally enigmatic quality that it is always seen smiling, in a sinister and creepy way even when it is unconscious or defeated in combat, as if mocking. It is believed that it is a way for him to intimidate his rivals, making them believe that no matter how many blows he receives, he is always in good condition, although in reality this is not the case. Parents in various parts of the world use Gengar as a threat to get their children to behave, telling them that if they misbehave, a Gengar will come for them.

Features volume 5

Even though he has legs, Gengar can use levitation. They say that at night they invoke evil spirits so that misfortunes and misfortunes befall everyone. They live in cemeteries and abandoned places so that no one bothers them. They are often accompanied by their preevolutions.

mega-gengar

In the sixth and seventh generations and only in combat, Gengar can Mega Evolve into Mega-Gengar thanks to Gengarite. When Mega Evolving, his body is purple on top and pink on the bottom. His arms are now larger and resting on the ground, as is his tail, while his legs remain hidden under the ground. A third yellow eye appears on his forehead, which does not blink and allows him to see other dimensions. His height is slightly smaller and his speed, defense, special attack and special defense characteristics are strengthened. His ability changes to trap shadow.

When mega evolving, his cry is also different.
