Eternally sullen, arrogant and undeniably short-tempered, Kageyama was originally a typical overbearing perfectionist who cared only about winning and completely ignored the opinions and well-being of his teammates. His habit of complaining about their work and shouting orders eventually led other Kitagawa Daiichi players to nickname him "the king of the court," constantly recalling the domineering, self-centered attitude he displayed during his high school volleyball career.

Despite his inability to communicate properly, he sincerely wants to do his best and is extremely passionate and dedicated when it comes to volleyball, to the point where he gets overly excited by almost every successful move he makes with Hinata.

Since joining Karasuno, he has become more respectful of his high school students (in particular Sugawara and Asahi), as well as more tolerant of people whose abilities and/or views differ from his own (for example, Tsukishima), and has again realized the importance of teamwork and mutual trust in the sport he values so much.
