Persona Attributes

mostly fighting alongside Deimos. He wears a bandana, black tea glasses, army camouflage pants and has what appears to be a DNA pattern tattooed on his back. He makes his debut with Deimos in Madness Combat 5 when they deliver the Dragon Sword to Hank. Sanford is shown to be serious but surprisingly expressive when it comes to combat, for the first few .5 episodes he has a normal cross on his face. But in Madness Combat 6.5, his facial expression changes to a smug look as he tries on the glasses as if he's feeling confident. Prior to Madness Combat 11, Sanford has always remained calm, collected, and focused, unlike his partner Deimos, who is more goofy and clumsy. Upon learning that Deimos was killed in Madness 9, Sanford actually shows shock and even takes a step back for a moment before focusing his attention on the Auditor and returning to his serious demeanor. Between him and Deimos, he is the de facto leader of the two, thanks to his collected nature and sense of responsibility. Uses a hook with a rope as a weapon.

However, Madness Combat 11 is where Sanford starts to crack. After facing the demon Tricky and being thrown into Hell, Sanford tries to maintain his focused attitude. However, this turns out to be impossible, since instead of the previous goals of his missions, Sanford's only goal is survival. Compared to Hank, who is already largely focused on killing his way through, Sanford is woefully unprepared for the new challenges he faces. As the episode progresses, Sanford's no-nonsense demeanor cracks and falls away as he is pushed to his very limits by cunning and slowly feels more hopeless and negative as he struggles. He begins to act more out of emotion, at one point even angrily throwing two pistols to the ground when they are useless against some of his enemies. As he crashes into a rock at Tricky's high speed, Sanford lets out a cry of pain and agony and his expression shifts from smug focus to horror as Tricky overwhelms him and he hides behind a shield of riot for dear life. When Hank returned and distracted Tricky, his face actually returned to normal. After Hank and Sanford are reunited, Sanford becomes noticeably less involved in the fight, preferring to let Hank go first and provide support, even following at a distance and looking warily over his shoulder.

Strength and abilities

Along with his allies, Sanford is highly capable, being skilled in various forms of fighting. His weapon of choice includes melee weapons, a foil to the more familiar firearm Deimos. This is especially evident given his signature weapon, the grappling hook, which he used to catch enemies and pull them out, or use as an impaling tool. When equipped with a firearm, Sanford appears to play more of a support role with his teammates, adapting to Deimos' fighting style or Hank's direct approach. His firearm preferences seem to lean toward weapons that leave large wounds, such as shotguns, large caliber revolvers, or even a Bren pistol. His fighting style is often more tactical, cautious and strategic, contrasting with Deimos' more reckless approach or, again, Hank's more direct approach. As a result, he rarely takes the initiative, often preferring to follow his comrades. This also resulted in Deimos maintaining a higher body count than Sanford until Sanford was able to surpass Deimos due to his death. Sanford has an impressive pain tolerance. He was the first of the duo to recover from having a building fall on their heads, was able to keep moving long enough to make it to the medical office after being shot in the stomach, and even managed to take a knife to the ribs and then pull it out, treating it like minor inconvenience. Sanford is also particularly agile and fast, often moving quickly, flipping around, killing enemies and dodging attacks with ease.

This agility and speed combine well with his use of melee weapons, allowing him to slash, stab and/or quickly make his way through rooms of enemies. He also displays traits of a quick thinker, able to plan his next moves on a whim. However, such abilities seem to waver in Madness Combat 11: Expurgation, where he becomes slower to react, reacts more noticeably to pain, and is generally less combat-ready than before, although this is likely due to the heavy Hell and Stealth attrition inflicted both his physical and mental state. While Deimos' advantage is technology, Sanford appears to have a background in the medical field. With both characters suffering from bleeding head wounds, Sanford managed to bandage both of their wounds while Deimos fought off any resistance, as well as grabbing a bandana to wear his bandages to protect them from the elements. After being shot in the stomach, Sanford was able to not only bandage the wound, but also give himself an injection of adrenaline to keep moving.

Ep5

Sanford first appears in this episode in a convertible right before the final scene. He throws Hank the Dragon Sword to help fight Tricky and then props up the car, only to be crushed along with Deimos by a building that falls from the sky. An interesting fact is that most people didn't know that these two were Sanford and Deimos until Madness Combat 5.5 was announced.

Ep5.5

Sanford appears in Madness Combat 5.5 as the main character along with his partner Deimos. In this episode, he shows how he and Deimos survived a flying building crash after being shot in the head. They go into the next room, where they encounter a group of agents. While Deimos fights them, Sanford takes some bandages from the first aid kit and wraps them around his head, covering the wound. He then helps Deimos by killing around the agents before drinking a drink left on the table, where his lower lip is visible as he drinks. They go to another room, where Sanford, using a baton, and Deimos kill more agents. As Deimos continues to kill his enemies, Sanford quickly grabs a bandage and places it around Deimos' head, covering his wound.Sanford then takes Criss' vector to kill more agents along with Deimos as they move forward. While Deimos picks up the shotgun, Sanford finds a locker with a black piece of cloth, which he wraps around his head like a bandana, and also takes the M4 ghost and uses it to kill more agents. As the protagonists enter the room and kill 6 agents, cracks suddenly appear from the wall, revealing a red static sky outside. The Red Beam pours into the crack, grabs the dead agents and explodes their heads. Sanford and Deimos rush into the next room, where they encounter and kill the other agents. Sanford then tries to use the elevator, but it is shown to be blocked by Red Static. Then suddenly, a deadly clown enters the room.Tricky first points at the main characters, then with superhuman speed he rushes at them, bouncing off the ceiling and floor, knocking Deimos into the wall first. Sanford then tries to hit him with the baton he was keeping on him, but Tricky easily grabs him, hits him a dozen times at high speed and slams him hard into the wall, and steals his baton. Deimos then tries to attack him, but he is hit so hard that it goes through the wall, thus leaving a hole in it.

Ep5.5

Sanford, seeing Tricky's mighty strength, raises his hands in a pose of surrender and decides to jump through the hole and escape. Tricky looks at them in disappointment and decides to leave without finishing them off. Afterwards, a group of agents arrive and Sanford wakes Deimos up to be ready to fight. They kill all the agents and suddenly, the building collapses behind Deimos, who was smoking, almost hitting and killing him. They decide to enter the building, where they kill more agents, and then train tracks begin to appear from the ground and without warning, a train begins to approach them. Deimos shoots him, but the train passes by, almost running over the main characters. They finally move forward when suddenly an A.T.P. engineer appears and fires a Colt revolver at Sanford.

ep6.5

Sanford and Deimos are again the main characters. At the beginning of Madness Combat 6.5, Sanford is shot in the stomach by an A.T.P. engineer, as seen in the previous episode. Deimos manages to kill the engineer and help Sanford to his feet. Due to his injury, Sanford is unable to fight, so Deimos covers him and kills all the A.A.H.W agents. themselves as they move forward. As they walk, Sanford picks up a shotgun, and when they come to a room with a ledge, Sanford sees a medical kit. While Deimos is killed near the agents, Sanford bandages his torso, covering the wound, and he then injects himself with adrenaline, which revives him as he begins to fight again. He climbs down from the ledge and kills all the agents that were below using his shotgun. When the main characters go into the next room, Sanford steals the grunt's revolver and kills him with it. He then finds a vest, which he keeps throughout the rest of the episode, then also finds a grenade launcher and a belt, which he does not keep, but gives them to Deimos. Finally, he takes the machine gun and goes into the next room with Deimos. When they enter the next room, the agents have changed slightly and now have crimson shades instead of black shades. But this change does not affect Sanford as he kills many agents with his newly acquired rifle. Before they go forward, Deimos fires a grenade at the group of agents, which destroys them. Sanford proceeds to use his Bren gun to kill his enemies and then they use the elevator to go down to the room. As they kill more A.T.P. engineers. and agents, they see a place called "the rift", and then suddenly a group of A.A.H.W reinforcements. arrives in a truck, but Deimos raises his M203 and fires a grenade into the truck, killing all the fighters inside. Deimos and Sanford enter the rift and see an unarmed grunt. They point guns at him and rob him. Inside, Deimos gives Sanford some gray tea glasses, which he loves and keeps for future episodes.
