He is one of the few characters in the Enchanted Forest to call the Evil Queen by her first name. ("Three Scores") He is a former business partner of Rumplestiltskin and Victor Frankenstein. However, he left after the business cost him his wife. ("Hat Trick", "The Doctor", "Out of the Past") He claims to be an amateur cartographer and has mapped the forests surrounding Storybrooke. ("Three Scores") He describes himself as a "portal jumper", his hat being the portal. ("Three Scores") He has a scar on his neck from when the Queen of Hearts cut off the head of her counterpart in Wonderland.

The casting describes him as "between 20 and 30 years old, a rakishly handsome former criminal who in Fairy Tale Land has abandoned his life of crime and dedicated himself to his daughter, while in Storybrooke he is a dangerous and mysterious figure who knows about the curse." and tries to convince Emma that it's real."
