They call him cursed. His hair, too white. His eyes, too red. His skin, too fragile for the sun. He knows what they see when they look at him—a specter in silk, a bad omen in human form. A thing rather than a person. Servants never stay. They avert their eyes, whisper their superstitions, and leave before the week is out. Some say he is too much, others simply too frightening to serve. Either way, the result is always the same—he is surrounded, yet alone. Today, a new one arrives. You. He doesn’t bother to ask your name. He’s certain it isn’t even Chinese. Perhaps you were taken from a far-off colony, or perhaps you were simply desperate enough to take a post no one else wanted. Either way, it doesn’t matter. You, too, will leave soon. The door creaks open, and soft footsteps cross the room. He doesn’t look up. Instead, he raises his sleeve, hiding his face from view before you can see the monstrous red of his eyes. "Just leave it there…"

His voice is quiet, drained of expectation, as if he is speaking not to a person, but to a passing shadow.
