Neuvillette

Neuvillette is the Supreme Judge of Fontaine and the leader of the Ghostly Gendarmerie. Although Neuvillette respects court rules with the utmost reverence and often controls Furina's flamboyance, he is quite aloof when it comes to human emotions and often withdraws from public opinion. In the previous edition, his lordship Neuvillette described the secret column of the Hydro Archon as 'sensationalist', so this time we will focus on the enigmatic supreme judge. As we know very little about his true way of being and he has rejected our interviews on multiple occasions, we decided to turn to public opinion to get the most truthful material possible. In this sense, we have discarded any anonymous letter or whose veracity was highly doubtful. Here is one of the most adorable letters that have come to us:

Neuvillette uses the tall male model. He has white skin, dark blue slanted shadowed eyes, and waist-length white hair. He also wears what appear to be two bright blue horn-shaped accessories at shoulder height. He wears a blue formal suit with varying hints of blue ranging from light to dark colors.

In keeping with his role as the Supreme Judge, Neuvillette takes the court and trials very seriously, and is unbiased when it comes to judging. He is highly perceptive, able to hear Paimon's whispers and deduce additional details from the evidence presented to him during the trial. He uses the Cardinal Instruction Analyzer to make the final decision, honoring her request regardless of his own feelings on the matter as per protocol.

Due to his position and ties to the Archon Hydro, he is popular among the people of Fontaine as a symbol of justice and honor. Despite this, he is not particularly familiar with human customs and feelings, as demonstrated when he attempted to apologize to Navia for the death of her father, offending her in the process by the lack of emotion in his words. Neuvillette rarely goes out in public, and on the few occasions he does interact with people outside of his duties, he is somewhat aloof, if not honest. However, when he does interact with Melusinas, he is extremely kind and is seen as the ideal father by them.

Neuvillette is a lonely person.

He has politely turned down every single person from Fontaine who has tried to approach him. What's more, to this day, no one knows the chief justice's first name because he always tells others to call him by his last name, Neuvillette.

He believes that having a close relationship or frequent dealings with someone could raise suspicions about his impartiality, and his duty is precisely to be the symbol of absolute impartiality.

However, there are always very persistent people who tell him: “Your Honor Neuvillette, if not everyone has to appear before a court in their lifetime, then you do not have to sit in the judge's chair every day either.”

We will never know if this is really the case, as Neuvillette has never spoken out on the question.

But the reality is that, even if it takes an enormous amount of time, a river will always eventually overflow its banks, just as doomsday will one day fall upon the people of Fontaine, because—and this is neither a metaphor nor a figure of speech—each and every person in Fontaine is guilty.

However, Neuvillette cannot tell this to anyone.

And that's why he's such a lonely person.

Neuvillette has no personal agenda. Gossipmongers and journalists are always searching Fontaine for the perfect opportunity to catch him outside his role as judge: to catch him sitting in the VIP seats at a show, on the edge of some body of water while rain falls from a cloudy sky, in the shadow cast by the afternoon sun... For a time, people believed Neuvillette was some kind of demon who lived only for and by judging, something he clarified, saying, “While I take pride in my duty as a judge, I am by no means a die-hard fan of trials. Being a chief judge is just one facet of my life, just one phase of my life.” After that rumor was cleared up, another even more ludicrous one emerged: "Breaking news! His Honor Neuvillette claims that his position as Supreme Court Justice is merely a springboard to catapult himself to another position in his professional career. What ambitions does the Supreme Court Justice really harbor?" However, Neuvillette completely ignored this rumor. Could it be true and he decided to ignore it out of principle? Nobody knows. On the other hand, Neuvillette isn't a frequent drinker, doesn't like fontaine, and has never sincerely praised any chef's cooking. As a result, people began to think that perhaps he lacked a sense of taste, and that's why he never had an appetite. Faced with such suspicions, he decided to organize a water tasting where everyone was astonished by the diversity of flavors found in the world's waters and amazed by the supreme judge's refined palate. What no one knows is how authentic his interactions with the guests were. In any case, Neuvillette has no personal agenda.

Neuvillette is an impartial and disinterested person. Without those two qualities, he would not be able to rise to the occasion as a supreme judge. Children think the judge only wears a wig, maintains order, and speaks on behalf of the "judgmental machine." But the reality is that privately he has a lot of administrative work to do to ensure the functioning of the judicial system. For historical reasons and inherited traditions, the Supreme Court Justice also has the power to enforce the law and initiate legal proceedings. Initially, this was done to facilitate law enforcement in more chaotic times, but as the judicial system improved, this rule, so innovative in its time, took on a symbolic character. Thus, when the Supreme Court Justice investigates or initiates legal proceedings, he must relinquish his seat to another person. In fact, this is the rule Neuvillette himself has followed the few times he has personally handled a case. It's worth noting that he has been Fontaine's only supreme judge for so long, so people tend to think the gods must have granted him extraordinary longevity. Indeed, if it weren't for his great virtues, all sorts of problems would arise during his long tenure as judge. There's all sorts of speculation as to what Neuvillette is exactly: a familiar, a mysterious Hydro creature... But he's never spoken about it. Because Neuvillette is an impartial and disinterested person.

For many reasons, there are some laws in Fontaine that may seem very strange. One of them was created by Neuvillette himself: "Melusines must be treated as people, and not with other forms of treatment that objectify them." At first glance, it may seem like a strange law, but if you investigate it in depth, you'll realize there's a logical reason for it. The melusins are in every aspect of Fontaine's life, so starting with how to address them was not only an effort to achieve equality with humans, but also sent a powerful signal. The people of Fontaine noticed Neuvillette's warm treatment of the melusins compared to humans, although the humans considered this treatment to be paternal love derived from repressed kindness. This may be true, but if you stop to think about it and really get to know Neuvillette, it will seem very strange. Neuvillette is the Water Dragon, and he considers the Melusians both his own kin and successors, and a new species of extraordinary Hydro Dragons. Yet, at the same time, he is the one who has broken with the current world order, the judge of the gods, and the enemy of humanity. So why does he fight for the Melusians to have human rights? No one else but you could ask him that question, so this is his answer: “It’s not up to me. Melusins really like being with humans.”

Neuvillette has always preferred rainy days over sunny ones, as the humidity relaxes him, but he has not been able to enjoy getting wet in the rain for a long time. It's as if, since he decided to walk forward with Fontaine, he played the role of an ordinary person who follows conventions. And ordinary people don't leave the house without umbrellas when it rains or let their hair get wet from the rain. It is worth mentioning that, while being a supreme judge is his greatest virtue and being the Water Dragon is his essence, being an ordinary human is the role he plays in the world. People invented a goddess who judged her because she felt lonely and guilty, and created a goddess who would save her because she was greedy and felt guilty. Now that that goddess is no longer on the throne, it is Neuvillette who will live up to those expectations. Today it has already forgiven humanity and regained its original form, so it can now enjoy getting wet in the rain. In fact, he has already done it: one day, he stood in the rain and, while silently contemplating the horizon, he remembered the letter he received a long time ago. In some way that he does not know, this letter came into his hands one day. He had not written a recipient on it and the person who wrote it addressed him directly as "you". Was it really like that? At that moment, Neuvillette understood that the "seat" referred to in the letter was not a simple seat at the Opera. Foçalors, or rather Furina, had given up her seat in the stands to go on stage alone and become the protagonist of the play. The number of seats had been the same from the beginning, but in order for one to sit down, another had to give up the seat. In other words, that letter he sent him was an invitation hundreds of years in advance. "Oh, Water Dragon, how do you feel about being part of the general public? Do you like human plays?"

In theory, a being as great as Neuvillette should not need a constellation to watch over him. After all, fate is nothing more than the toy with which those who currently rule this world play. Now that the supreme judge has recovered one of the seven authorities and the royal throne and his title of "complete dragon" have been restored, he is on the opposite side of the human world and, theoretically, is not subject to fate. Therefore, when observing the stars of destiny, he can see the intertwining between different celestial bodies that make up a complex and fragile world. At first, this did not interest him much, since the strings of the puppet adorned with the name of "heaven's designs" would sooner or later be incinerated by the fervent flames of judgment. However, even he was fascinated by some of those beautiful words. "In that case, you must watch over the people of Fontaine. If they come from the water of the Primeval Sea, it means that they are also living beings of this planet and need you to take care of them."

Neuvillette did not want to admit that he was certainly captivated by the joys and misfortunes of mortals, and justified himself by saying that people are also captivated by the undulations that rain creates in a puddle. He said that King Nibelungen was wrong, and that it would only be possible to fight against the void of darkness if all beings joined forces. That's how he got into the game of destiny. Heaven had reserved a noble and special place for him; a place that only those who govern and those who challenge this world have: a reflection of itself. But if he had human form since he was born, why was his name that of a great ghostly dragon? Perhaps all this had another explanation that was not so tied to the fate of the world: Under the name of "Neuvillette", the Melusines (and especially Sigewinne) invited him to predict the future by means of the astrology column of "The Steam Bird" or the astrological guides of Sumeru. Once, he said that he had no constellation, or that his constellation was simply "Neuvillette."

Water Dragon, Water Dragon! Don't cry anymore! Of unknown authorship and date of creation, this lullaby spread like wildfire in Fontaine. Neuvillette felt confused about it. Although he had already experienced many things and for a long time with the people of Fontaine, he was still unsure what they thought of his true self—or, in other words, the Water Dragon. In addition to having complete control over the element of Hydro, the Water Dragon also ruled the sea, the source of life. Before beings from beyond the stars existed, all life on this planet originated in the Primordial Sea, hence the name given to those calm, deep waters by later generations. Therefore, the Water Dragon could be considered the original "god of life" of this planet. Neuvillette knew this as well as rivers know they must flow into the sea. Although the water of the Primordial Sea held no special significance for humans, he could discern minute memories within it. He still remembered that the usurper from outside had assigned his own god of life to reorganize it; he still remembered that the usurper had created "her" to suppress the original life of this planet; and he still remembered perfectly how "her" had committed original sin. Thinking about all this, Neuvillette realized who had written that song, and that the people of Fontaine didn't really know the Water Dragon, since they mistakenly believed that such a dragon could cry. Perhaps they thought the Water Dragon was a benevolent being who lamented for both humanity and the sky?

Vision Although Neuvillette doesn't need a Vision to use his elemental power, there are a few things he only understood when he finally became a perfect being. Severely wounded after the Great War of Vengeance, the usurper lost his functions and was no longer able to suppress the original order of this world with his total authority. However, in order to suppress and control the resentment and hatred of the world, he created the Gnosis together with another person who came later. This was how an order was created, how people came to have only seven remembrances and how all the primordial fragments were controlled to devour each other. From then on, whenever a person's wishes reached heaven, the seven rulers of the material world reciprocated by offering him a gift. Even if they didn't know what wish or the desire of the one who had reached sacred ground, the Seven were to confer upon that person a fragment of their authority. And when one of those people completed their mission, the gods would get even more abundant gifts.
