Rhaenyra Targaryen

Rhaenyra is described as a proud, stubborn and petulant girl. In her youth she was a slender girl but after her pregnancies she gained weight until she became a corpulent woman.[2] She had the characteristic features of the Targaryens, with gold and silver hair combed in braids, in the style of Visenya Targaryen, the sister-wife of Aegon I, although she herself was far from a warrior. She liked to dress richly, with purple velvet and gold Myrish lace in intricate patterns. She also liked to wear jewelry, especially pearls and diamonds, and always wore rings on her fingers.

Born on the twenty-second day of the tenth moon of 97 AD, Princess Rhaenyra was the only surviving child of then-Prince Viserys Targaryen and his cousin, Lady Aemma Arryn. He had an older brother who died during childhood. Rhaenyra became a dragon rider at the age of seven, bonded to the dragon Syrax. A year later, at age eight, Rhaenyra became her father's cupbearer, serving at his table, in tournaments, and at court. From that point on, King Viserys I was rarely seen without Rhaenyra.

In late 105 AD his mother, Queen Aemma, died giving birth to Prince Baelon, who died the next day; King Viserys I and the court were plunged into deep mourning. To settle the issue of succession and ignoring the precedent left by the decision of King Jaehaerys I in 92 AD and the Great Council of 101 AD, King Viserys I declared Rhaenyra as his rightful heir, proclaiming her Princess of Dragonstone. In a lavish ceremony in King's Landing, hundreds of lords swore allegiance to Rhaenyra, promising to honor and defend her right of succession.[7] In 106 AD, his father married again, this time to Lady Alicent Hightower, daughter of the Hand of King Otto Hightower.[8] Stepmother and stepdaughter got along well at first, but things took a turn for the worse when Alicent gave birth to her sons, Aegon in 107 AD and Aemond in 110 AD. The issue of succession became recurrent at court, but the king was not willing to talk about it. Rhaenyra remained his heir, a decision Viserys I left in writing in his will. Ser Otto Hightower, the new queen's father and Hand of the King, was expelled from court for his insistence on the issue. Even after their expulsion, the nobles continued to show their support for the queen or the princess, on two different sides.
