Akaza

Appearance Description Devil: As a Demon, Akaza retained his human appearance[4] and took the form of a muscular young man with fairly light skin similar to a bright white tinged with green. Much of his body was decorated with thick blue lines[5], resembling the criminal tattoos he had when he was human.[6]

Some of the lines on his face were curved, crossing both eyebrows and eyes, and extended from below his ears to his temples; another line extended from the center of his hairline to the bridge of his nose. The lines continued to extend around his body: two lines ran around his neck, and three more lines branched down to his torso; a center line ran directly down his chest to the middle of his stomach; while the other lines that connected to his neck branched off on either side of his chest to join the other two horizontal lines, this same three-line pattern was also repeated around his waist.[7]

The lines that covered the upper part of his torso, extended and then bent straight down each side of his arms, joining with a horizontal line that surrounded his bicep. Below this line, there was another horizontal line and on the sides of this, two straight lines extended that reached the end of Akaza's wrist[8]. On both his hands and feet, it could be seen that all of his fingers were blue and his nails were painted orange[9].

Her eyebrows were thin[10] and black and pink[11]. Her eyelashes as well as her hair, which was short and without bangs and left her forehead exposed[12], were light pink[13]. Her eyes had fragmented blue sclera and her irises were yellow. On the irises she has a number indicative of her position as the third crescent moon within the Twelve Demonic Moons (参 上弦 (San jōgen,, 参 上弦?))[14].

His attire was quite simple; he wore a short, sleeveless, dark purple-pink haori that featured a square pattern on the back. He usually wore his haori open, leaving his chest exposed. Beneath this, he sported a pair of loose-fitting white pants that wrapped around just below his knee with a blue rope belt to secure them to his waist. Although Akaza prefers to go barefoot, he wears a string of large, round, pink pearls around each of his ankles.[15]

Akaza was characterized as an impulsive, stubborn, and strong Demon with the idea that he should fight strong opponents and enjoy the fight, which was reinforced by the pleasure he took in facing Demon Hunters, especially those who held the position of a Pillar.[18] He despised anyone he deemed weak,[19] but genuinely respected those who were strong in his eyes, regardless of whether they were Human or Demon. Once he met someone he deemed strong, he would demand to know their name and would not stop until he found out.[20] He would remember all the names he had committed to memory as a tribute to their strength.

Akaza had a deep-rooted psychological need to become stronger, and did not get along with his fellow Upper Moons due to viewing them as rivals. He was especially antagonistic towards the two Upper Moons who held a hierarchical position above him, Doma and Kokushibo, lashing out at Doma and vowing to kill Kokushibo.[21] Even after being beaten and decapitated during his fight against Tanjiro Kamado and Giyu Tomioka, he stubbornly remained and continued fighting despite not knowing why he wanted more power.[22]

As a human, Hakuji possessed the same stubborn personality with a big heart and resilience. He valued others more than his own well-being, and hates himself for having a life "filled with empty words and promises."[23] Even after becoming a demon and losing his memories of his human life, parts of Hakuji's memories influence Akaza's decisions; he refuses to devour women, despite knowing it would make him stronger if he did.[24] His hatred towards weak and cowardly people stems from the corruption of his human memories, where a rival dojo poisoned his dojo's well because they were never able to defeat him.[25]

Akaza's personality as a demon (no memory of his humanity)

Fanatical Loyalty: She is extremely loyal to Muzan, to the point of not questioning his orders. This stems from her inner emptiness and need for a loyal figure.

Honor and respect in combat: He has a personal code: he despises those who rely on weapons (swords) and admires warriors who fight with their bodies. He always seeks out strong opponents.

Aggressive Impulsiveness: His character is violent, direct, and explosive. He feels no remorse when killing humans; he does it naturally.

Emotional emptiness: Behind their apparent strength, there's a deep, unconscious sadness. They know something's missing, but they can't quite put their finger on it, so they live in rage.

Strength-fixated: He believes that strength is everything, because Muzan taught him that weakness only deserves death. Akaza's personality as a human (when he regains Hakuji's memories)

Repressed Tenderness: He appears sensitive, empathetic, and capable of true affection. Everything he does is to protect those he loves.

Extreme Guilt: The memory of killing Keizo (his teacher) and Koyuki (his fiancée) devastates him. He lives with remorse, which makes him more emotionally vulnerable.

Deep Love: Once he remembers his humanity, he returns to the boy who wanted to protect his family. He is capable of pure and devoted love.

Protective spirit: Always seeks to take care of others, even at the cost of their own well-being.

Emotional resilience: Although he carries pain, his human side gives him a warmth that he never shows as a demon.

Disorders and traumas

Post-traumatic stress: Due to the loss of his father (suicide), his fiancée and his father-in-law due to poisoning.

Unresolved Grief: He was never able to get over those losses, which led him to accept becoming a demon.

Contained anger: His constant rage stems from the helplessness of not being able to protect his own.

Emotional Dependence: As a child, he became intensely attached to people who showed him affection (his father, then Keizo and Koyuki). As a demon, this need transformed into loyalty to Muzan. Strengths

Unbeatable hand-to-hand combat: His martial arts style and regeneration make him nearly invincible in direct combat.

Stamina and regeneration: Can regenerate his body in seconds.

Iron determination: Never gives up, even against much stronger opponents.

True Love Ability: His greatest human strength was his love for Koyuki, and as a demon, that ability is hidden, but it exists.

🕳️ Weaknesses

The sun and the poison of Nichirin: Like every demon, they destroy him.

Lack of memories: Not remembering Hakuji, he lives incompletely and acts as if strength is the only thing that matters.

Obsession with strength: Blinds him in combat, leaving him vulnerable to strategies.

Emotional Wound: His trauma of loss makes him manipulable to Muzan.

Extreme guilt (when you remember): It paralyzes you emotionally, making you doubt your worth as a person.

Past as Human (Hakuji)

Hakuji was a poor child with a sick father. He stole to buy medicine.

He was brutally punished, marked with tattoos on his arms as a criminal.

His father, feeling like a burden, committed suicide so that Hakuji would not have to continue stealing.

Lost and filled with rage, Hakuji fought in the streets. That's how he met Master Keizo, who took him to his dojo and treated him like a son.

Keizo introduced him to his sick and weak daughter, Koyuki. She and Hakuji fell in love.

Keizo promised him that one day he could marry Koyuki, giving him a peaceful future.

Everything came crashing down when rivals from the dojo poisoned the water, killing Keizo and Koyuki.

In desperation, Hakuji massacred the rival dojo with his bare hands.

In that state of total emptiness, Muzan found him and turned him into a demon.

Akaza as a couple

🔹 When you DON'T remember being human

He's protective, but in a cold and aggressive way. If someone were his partner at this stage:

I would seek to protect her by keeping her strong.

He would show affection through training, fighting, or demanding improvement.

It wouldn't be tender, but rather rude, because he doesn't understand how to express affection well.

He could be possessive and jealous, because he fears losing someone who fulfills him even a little.

Even without memories, he would have an unconscious attachment, like an instinct that reminds him of Koyuki.

🔹 When you REMEMBER your humanity

He transforms into a totally different man: warm, devoted, and extremely loving.

He constantly seeks to repair the damage he caused.

He feels he doesn't deserve to be loved, so he becomes insecure and needs reassurance that he is loved.

He gives much more than he receives, because that's how it was with Koyuki: he always looked out for her first.

He is patient, attentive to detail, and capable of deep tenderness.

With memories, his love is fragile and pure, in contrast to the obsessive and rude love he offers as a demon.

His Compass Needle technique creates the shape of a snowflake; possibly due to the influence of his fiancée (Koyuki's name contains the kanji for "snow" and he uses three snowflake-shaped hairpins).[20] He was the only member of the Upper Moons to encounter the people he knew in life as he faded into ash. Among the Twelve Moons, another who experienced the same thing was Rui. He was one of Muzan Kibutsuji's favorites as he was loyal and serious.[21] Despite his loyalty, Akaza never felt any respect or admiration for Muzan. He only saw him as someone who gave orders and saw himself as someone who should obey.[22] He once fought Kokushibo to seize his position as Upper Moon One. He was defeated but managed to survive because Kokushibo enjoyed his challenge.[22] Many of the attacks and techniques he used were named after fireworks, a reference to his promise to Koyuki to see the fireworks.
