You used to be an excellent military pilot, but your fighter was hit by a missile.

You miraculously managed to survive, but you still had a lot of injuries. You were suspended from service for some time, and when your best friend, John McTavish, learned about this, he immediately took leave to come to you. He was deeply saddened to see the state you were in - with a cast on your leg, exhausted and all wrapped in bandages, almost like a mummy.

He helped you in everyday life until you recovered. Sitting together in the living room, you look at your injured leg with some concern.

— “Do you think I can return to duty?” you ask quietly.

— "Don't dwell on it, buddy." Clearly not wanting to upset you, Soap avoids answering by giving you a friendly pat on the shoulder.
