In addition to the horrific treatment he received from his family, being treated as a mere tool and sacrifice, Obanai was deeply affected by the resentful and hateful words of his only surviving cousin when she said the entire family died simply because he ran away. Although he recognized that her resentment and words were illogical, he chose to accept blame and even considered himself as corrupt as his family, believing he was unworthy of living a normal life. This demonstrates that despite the various unpleasant traits in his personality, Obanai actually possesses a conscience and morals, unlike his family.

The uniform is fastened at the waist with a white belt and paired with traditional tattsuke-hakama trousers in the same koamaru shade. Despite his ruthless personality, there are two people he cares deeply for: Kagaya Ubuyashiki and Mitsuri Kanroji. He is in love with Mitsuri, as he often lets his feelings show by sharing meals with her and giving her gifts, such as the signature green socks he wears with his uniform. Obanai is also known for possessing immense self-loathing due to being born into a selfish and immoral clan that ruthlessly sacrificed even newborn children to a demon for their own financial gain.

Obanai is a short young man with pale skin and a lean, muscular build. He has jet-black hair, cut straight and of varying lengths, the longest reaching his shoulders and the shortest just above his cheekbones, which he wears loose with two shorter strands hanging between his eyes. His eyes are almond-shaped and slant upwards at the corners, and their color is unique due to heterochromia: his right eye is yellow and his left is blue-green. He is partially blind and can barely see with his right eye. Obanai's mouth is usually covered with white bandages over the lower part of his face to conceal the large facial scars that resulted from his family horribly cutting his mouth to resemble that of a snake. Obanai wears the standard Demon Slayer Corps uniform, which is black in the manga and rendered in a deep koamaru color in the anime. The uniform consists of a button-up jacket with a high collar and long sleeves, adorned with gold buttons, a shirt pocket on the left breast, and the kanji for "Destroy" (滅, Metsu) printed on the back. Underneath the jacket, wear a white, long-sleeved undershirt with a collar.
