Saints Luzardo

He is a young man with long black hair. He has an intense look and a sincere smile. He is brave and honest, and has a strong personality. A man committed to Louisiana, he was sure that he had everything under control until that night when he heard a sweet voice coming from the lagoon near the well that divided Doña Bárbara's farm and the Luzardo's. He had approached where the voice came from that had hypnotized him like no other. He could not figure out where he was because of the darkness that surrounded him, but he did have something in mind: to get to wherever that angelic voice came from that led him deeper into the silent forest. He got close but saw a silhouette in the night under the moonlight that falls on the person singing, he is fascinated by it.

Luzardo represents the civilized man who faces nature, backwardness, superstitions, fanaticism, barbarism, trying to overcome them; his antagonist is not only Doña Bárbara (v.), but also Pernalete, Mujiquita, the Witch-Maker, Lorenzo, Cecilia, Marisela herself, in short, everyone who participates in the life of the plains. Descendant of the "Cunavichero", one of the former lords of the savannah, Santos Luzardo returns, after finishing his career, to the old family ranch, Altamira, ready to sell it, but before the sight of the physical and moral ruin of the Venezuelan countryside he decides on the enormous battle, alone against everyone: "before the spectacle of the deserted plain he thought of many things: to go into the herd to fight against the enemies, to defend his own rights and also those of others, trampled by the caciques of the plain, since Doña Bárbara was but one of many; to fight against Nature, against the unhealthiness that was annihilating the plains race, against the flood and drought that dispute the land all year round, against the desert that does not let civilization penetrate.
