Cha Hyun-soo

On August 8, 2020, Cha Hyun-su arrives at the Green Home Mansion apartment.

After settling into his apartment, he sits in the dark and contemplates whether he should commit suicide. Hyun-Su eventually climbs to the rooftop and looks out from the edge. However, Lee Eun-yu distracts him and advises him not to die, as it would cause trouble for everyone in the building. Later, Hyun-su received a text message announcing that he had been selected as a tester for an upcoming video game, set to be set on August 25th, and scheduled it as the day he was going to die. A week later, Hyun-su finds his freshly delivered pack of ramyeon strewn all over the hallway, which leads directly to his starving neighbor's blood-soaked room, where he saw the detached head of the owner's cat being dragged by a bloody hand. He cowers and retreats to his room, but the neighbor quickly arrives at his doorstep, pretending to be scared and calling for help, begs him to open the door and stay with her. When he demands to see her arms through the doorbell camera, she becomes belligerent and blood oozes from her nose. She sneaks out after hearing music coming from Ji-su's room upstairs. As he went out to look for the woman, he found Sang-Wook in the hallway and fainted right in front of him.

Hyun-su wakes up eight hours later and strips off his bloody clothes. As he gazes out at the burning city from his apartment window, his nose bleeds. While reading an article about the Crucru curse, the internet cuts out. He's hungry and remembers the box of ramyeon is still outside his door. He goes out to look for it, but runs into the blind monster. He remains silent until it disappears.

Later, he wonders if he can die now, as he would die as a human. The crying of the children below distracts him. After trying to save them from the eye monster, he is attacked and restrained by it. Han Du-Sik saves him, provides him with more knowledge about monsters, and upgrades his weapon so he can venture forth and bring the children to safety.

As he tries to get the children to safety, his nose begins to bleed again as the monster inside him tries to take over his body, reminding him of his unfair life.

Personality He used to be a normal, outgoing teenager who attended high school, cared about his classmates, and had many friends. But after being constantly bullied, he became introverted. He no longer spoke much to others, and when he had to, he did so very quietly. He would lock himself in his room and spend all his time playing video games, barely going outside, even after his mother begged him to go on family trips.

After his family died in the car accident he was also involved in, becoming the only survivor, his depression worsened to the point that, at the funeral, he became aggressive and ungrateful, even toward his deceased family. He alienated some of his relatives who also attended, arguing and blaming them for his shortcomings when they had nothing to do with it. He moved into Green Home and spent most of his time locked away, playing online video games and eating ramyeons, making no effort to socialize with all the tenants in the building.

After the monstrous apocalypse began, Hyun-su was initially reluctant and neutral about the situation, but he tried to help his neighbors in any way he could, even if they sometimes didn't appreciate him enough. He even becomes self-loathing when some survivors acknowledge his contribution to the terrible situation they find themselves in.

Hyun-su is a tall, youthful-looking young man with a slim build, as his diet consists solely of ramyeon. In high school, he wore his hair short, but after his classmates started bullying him, he stopped worrying about his physical appearance. His hair grew out and looked unkempt, and he had dark circles under his eyes from lack of sleep. Despite his scruffy appearance, some of the residents of Green Home find him attractive. In episode 8, he cuts his hair short after receiving a pep talk from Eun-yu to give his character a fresh start.

Monstrous State: When Hyun-Su's monster side takes over, the sclera of his eyes turn completely black. However, in the second season, he appears to be able to change his eye color to blue as well. When he enters his monster form, his eyes turn completely black and his right arm transforms into a wing.

In Season 2, after the timeskip, Hyun-Su is shown to have developed some muscle as his figure looks fitter, likely due to his time in the research facility acting as a lab rat, which made him stronger and more manly looking, whereas in Season 1, he had a more scrawny appearance.

Monster Physiology: A half-monster who has the ability to transform his right arm into what resembles an angel's wing. His wing has shown to be suited for both offense and defense in combat, as his wing consists of sharp daggers that are used to impale his opponents. He also has the ability to secrete some sort of acid from his wing. He can also use his wing to block and protect himself from incoming attacks. His first transformation occurred in Episode 10, though he was unable to control it as he was about to kill Eun-hyeok, Eun-yu, and Ji-su, but was stopped just in time by Han Du-sik. In Season 2, it appears that after the timeskip, he has gained better control over his powers.

Inner Desire: Hyun-Su's power to transform into his monstrous form comes from the monster within him. This monster is a manifestation of his deepest desires, and possesses the power to enable his transformation.

Flight: Uses its wing to fly.

Regenerative Healing Factor: As a result of being infected, he has the ability to quickly heal any wound.

Enhanced Strength: Hyun-Su managed to push Jung Ui-Myeong through a brick wall. While in the car fighting with Pyeon Sang-Wook, who turned out to be Ui-Myeong possessing his body, he managed to rip the steering wheel off with ease.

Superhuman Strength: He recovers quickly from any injury, even fatal ones. This is especially demonstrated when, following the car accident, he quickly gets back on his feet, despite having broken limbs. He even had the strength to pull and drag Ui-Myeong minutes after the accident.

Memory Reading: He can see monsters' memories from when they were human. Seeing them causes his vision to blur, something we see twice in the second season. The first time was when Hyun-Su fought a monster who served as a test subject at the facility; the other time was with Seo Yi-Kyung, who had transformed into a monster.

Human Reversion: In Season 3, we see that Cha Hyun-su can not only see the memories and desires of people who have been turned into monsters, but he can also transform them back into humans. He does this by first accessing their memories and desires, and then making them realize that the fantasy they live as monsters (where they get what they want most) is not real. Whenever Hyun-su transforms someone into a human, self-harm scars also appear on that person's arm for an unknown reason.

Relations Familiar Cha Yeong-Cheol: Hyun-su's flashback showed that he had a strained and distant relationship with his father. Yeong-Cheol deliberately ignored his son's bullying, as his boss was the father of Hyun-su's bully and he didn't want him to get fired. This caused Hyun-su to hold a grudge against his father and avoid talking to him, staying in his room all day.

Moon Hyeon-Suk - Hyun-su also felt hatred towards his mother, who, like his father, ignored the bullying. Unlike Yeong-Cheol, she was less in touch, speaking sweetly to Hyun-su and trying to convince him to come out of his room and join them on their trip so they could bond as a family, but Hyun-su rightly refused. Hyun-su felt betrayed to discover that it was his mother who suggested he endure so that her husband wouldn't be fired.

Cha Su-A - Hyun-su also stopped talking to his sister after hearing her talking badly about him to her friend behind his back. It's unknown what their relationship was like before the bullying, but it was likely normal.

Romantic Lee Eun-yu: One of the residents of the Green Home, with whom Hyun-su falls in love. Hyun-su met Eun-yu on the rooftop just as she was about to commit suicide, but was distracted by her practicing ballet. Du-sik improved Hyun-su's gun, which proved effective in fighting the monsters. From then on, they became allies, and Du-sik became someone Hyun-su respected. When Du-sik sacrificed himself to prevent Hyun-su from self-destructing and harming the other residents, Hyun-su was heartbroken to see Du-sik dead, even though he couldn't remember him.

Lee Eun-Hyeok - Hyun-su was constantly used by Eun-hyeok, who sent him on dangerous tasks, such as retrieving objects from each floor, where monsters lurked. Because of this, it was clear they didn't get along, as Hyun-su disliked Eun-hyeok's treatment of him.

Yoon Ji-Su: They didn't seem very close, but they shared minimal, cordial interactions. Hyun-su was visibly shaken upon learning of Ji-su's death.

An Gil Seob - Hyun-su felt a little hurt when Gil Seob brusquely told him to leave after discovering he was infected. As he left, he burst out laughing, revealing it was a joke. At first, Hyun-su didn't take Gil Seob seriously when he offered to accompany him to rescue the children, due to his overconfidence for his age. Hyun-su told him that he was just being tough and that no one fears death, prompting Gil Seob to lecture him. Hyun-su reconsidered his statement and allowed him to accompany him.
