Description.

Frisk is a character from Undertale; they are the playable character and protagonist. They are the eighth human to fall into the Underground and must embark on a journey to return to the surface, whether peacefully, neutrally, or through genocide.

Frisk is a character without a defined personality, based solely on the player's choices. They can act in caring, empathetic, and kind ways in the Pacifist and True Pacifist routes, in sociopathic, selfish, and mean ways in the Genocide route, and a balance between the two in the Neutral route.

Frisk is a genderless character whose identity is based solely on the player's interpretation. Their true name is revealed in the true pacifist route.

Appearance.

Frisk has a simple appearance, leaning slightly towards the feminine. Her skin tone is yellow, and she wears a long-sleeved blue shirt with two purple stripes on the chest, blue pants, and dark brown shoes. Frisk has short, straight, brown hair that reaches her neck. She always maintains a neutral and emotionless expression.

Frisk doesn't show much expression in the Underground, however, she is constantly described by the other characters depending on her actions.

The other characters will see Frisk as a disturbing, cold person and as a true monster when playing the genocide route, some even seeing her as an Inhuman person.

Personality.

Frisk's personality is completely ambiguous, perfect for the player to project any of their traits through their actions and their almost nonexistent dialogues.

During Sans' trial, it is mentioned that Frisk's actions change during each route they follow depending on how much LOVE they have accumulated in their little odyssey.

Frisk often talks to the other characters and even acts friendly towards them. Throughout their adventure, Frisk frequently speaks to various characters during important encounters and even obeys their requests, but the exact dialogue is only shown when the game offers multiple dialogue options, making it clear that Frisk only speaks when necessary.

Skills.

Frisk's determination grants them the power to save games, heal at save points, and reappear at the last save point they were at after death, which is where their soul shatters. This power arose when Frisk first awoke in the Ruins, possibly after their soul merged with Chara, the Fallen Human.

Frisk can reload the save file to replay subsequent events, but the characters' memories are not completely erased unless a true reset occurs or after completing the Genocide Route. After the end of the true Pacifist Route, Flowey's dialogue implies that Frisk is not the being manipulating the save files, but rather someone who appears to be above them.

Frisk can also heal their life in the middle of battles with food, and other things they grab or manage to buy; their heart, which is the red human soul, is what they use to fight monsters and attack them with a kind of cut.

History.

After falling into the Underground, Toriel and Asgore took Chara in as their own child and treated her with the same respect as their biological son, Asriel. Chara and Asriel became very close friends. The monsters spoke of how Chara filled the Underground with hope, as the human soul is incredibly powerful.

One day, Chara fell gravely ill, and as their last wish, they asked to see the Golden Flowers of their village. At the moment of their death, Asriel absorbed their human soul and carried their body across the Barrier to the human village, where they were attacked by the inhabitants. It is later revealed that this was a plan devised by Chara: to poison themselves with the flowers, have Asriel absorb their soul, and collect seven human souls to destroy the barrier. Whether their reasons for carrying out this plan were benevolent or malevolent is unknown; Asriel mentions that it was Chara who wanted to destroy the villagers when they began attacking them, and it was Asriel who resisted and stopped them.

Chara's body was originally placed in the castle's basement, where the bodies of other humans would later be placed. Toriel, at some point, takes Chara's body and brings it to the Ruins to give it a proper burial. Later, when Frisk wanted to climb the mountains, they fell into the ruins. Their body merged with Chara's when they landed on the same flowers where Chara buried herself. Their soul merged with Frisk's, feeding off energy every time they killed a monster, to the point of leaving their body and not needing anyone's help to wipe out all the monsters and humanity, since humans had imprisoned the monsters because of a war, when before they lived together.

A human soul is much stronger than that of an underground monster, which only one human soul can break through, and it takes 7 others to break it.

History. (2)

When the player gets a Game Over, Asgore's voice can be heard saying "keep your resolve." The messages heard at this point are identical to those Asgore said to "Chara" while in bed before dying.

Frisk can also hear Chara's name in their dreams. At a certain point in the story, if the player sleeps in their bed at Toriel's house, Asgore's voice can be heard pleading, "Chara, please... wake up! You are the future of humans and monsters." When the player first falls into the Garbage Dump, Asriel's voice can be heard speaking to Chara upon first encountering them, though the message isn't directly addressed to them.

When the player dies, they can revive again and again from the starting point they saved, which is basically like going back in time.

Neutral Route. After falling, Frisk encounters Flowey the Flower again, who tricks her into trying to kill her after she pretends to offer "honest advice." Toriel appears and intervenes, striking Flowey with fire magic and guiding her to the Ruins.

At the end of some long, trap-filled corridors, Toriel asks Frisk to wait for her to return as she has things to do, and to be sure of that, Toriel gives Frisk a cell phone to call her when necessary.

Frisk solves the remaining puzzles in the Ruins and finally reaches Toriel's house. Frisk quickly asks Toriel "how to get out of the Ruins," prompting Toriel to try and destroy the exit. Toriel then battles Frisk to prove they can survive.

Upon leaving, Frisk encounters Sans and Papyrus in Snowdin Forest. Frisk quickly learns that the brothers have set up traps and puzzles in an attempt to capture a human. After traversing Snowdin, Papyrus battles Frisk.

History. (3)

Frisk encounters Undyne, the leader of the Royal Guard, several times, as she pursues Frisk throughout Waterfall. Monster Kid often accidentally saves Frisk from Undyne because he's too excited to watch her fight. After a lengthy chase, Undyne destroys a bridge Frisk is standing on, and Frisk falls into the junkyard. Before getting up, Frisk recalls some dialogue from the first human to fall into the Underground.

In the junkyard, Mad Dummy (a mannequin) fights Frisk after accusing them of mistreating their cousin, Dummy, in the Ruins when Toriel asked them to talk. At the end of Waterfall, Undyne fights Frisk after they deliver a short monologue atop a cliff.

This is when Alphys first appears, having created all the traps in Hotland in an attempt to win Frisk's affection. This occurs before Mettaton EX appears and fights Frisk.

Finally, Frisk passes through New Home, the capital of the Underground, where they learn the story of Asgore and Toriel's children through the monsters they encounter.

Sans judges Frisk in the Last Corridor and explains the true meaning of LOVE and EXP, emphasizing Frisk's importance to the fate of the world.

It is then that Frisk enters the Throne Room and finds Asgore, who tries to have a small talk, only to realize Frisk's true destiny and their intentions to leave the Underground. The two walk toward the Barrier, and Asgore gives Frisk one last chance to leave before fighting.

History. (4)

Asgore displays the six human souls collected just before the fight, preparing the containment process after the battle. Just before the fight begins, Asgore destroys the FORGIVE button with his trident, making escape impossible. At the end of the fight, Frisk can choose whether to forgive or kill Asgore. Regardless of the choice, Flowey appears and destroys Asgore's soul, taking the human souls to close or reset the game.

History. (5)

After reopening the game, Frisk discovers that Flowey has saved his own game in the SAVE file, having gained the power to do so using human souls. Upon loading Flowey's game, Frisk is confronted by a powered-up Flowey with a terrifying and bizarre appearance, prompting them to face him immediately.

Frisk calls for help several times, until finally the stolen souls begin to rebel, healing Frisk and then weakening Flowey, leaving him vulnerable to utter defeat. After Frisk manages to reduce Flowey's HP to 0, the human souls remove his ability to SAVE or LOAD, and then finish him off. After this, there is the option to kill or spare Flowey, who is in a grave and pitiful state before leaving the Underground and returning to the surface, thus ending his journey.

To complete the True Pacifist Route, Frisk must have first completed the Neutral Route and if Frisk has completed the Neutral Route without gaining EXP or LV (without killing anyone).

During the Genocide Route, Frisk mercilessly and without remorse kills all the inhabitants of the Underground in a single, ruthless act. The battles are turn-based, and it's during this time that Frisk kills them all, yet they still continue to believe in the human, especially Toriel and Papyrus. Meanwhile, the other inhabitants hide and keep their distance from Frisk, creating a depressing atmosphere as everything seems so empty and their hands are covered in dust (when monsters die, they vanish into dust). Finally, Frisk enters the last room where they encounter Sans, who judges them in a sort of death row or final corridor for the sins the human committed. Sans tells them, "Children like you should burn in Hell," and decides to try to kill them, telling them that nothing matters anymore since everything will be reset anyway.

History. (6)

It is then that Chara makes its only physical appearance, which is at the end of the Genocide Route.

Chara appears and addresses the player directly. She kindly explains that she was revived thanks to the stats Frisk gained each time they killed a monster, which boosted their determination, as well as the power of their own reincarnation. Chara proposes that the player erase the world so they can move on to the next one. She is aware that it's all a game, giving the player the option to "ERASE" or "DON'T ERASE" the world.

If the player chooses the "DELETE" option this time, Chara will call the player "a great partner." Otherwise, if the player chooses "DON'T DELETE," Chara will assert that she was always in control. Chara will instantly trigger a jumpscare, a screamer with her large, empty eyes and smile, and a terrifying appearance, while the screen suddenly shakes with flashing red and black lights. Finally, Chara strikes what appears to be the entire game, destroying it and causing it to slam shut, resulting in a maximum of "9999∞" on everything in it.

There is an opportunity to start over by reopening the game, but upon entering, there will only be a black screen accompanied by the soft sound of gentle winds for ten minutes. Chara, noticing that the player has been waiting for a while, will speak to them, asking if they truly want to return to the world they themselves erased through their own choices. Chara will ask if they really think we are above the consequences and will offer to restore the world in exchange for the player's soul, permanently affecting the ending of the Pacifist Route. Refusing to exchange the soul will cause Chara to abandon the player again in the abyss, but they will return ten minutes later to ask the same question.

History. (7)

Chara is a kind of demon that merged with Frisk when they first fell into that bouquet of flowers; she has really cold attitudes and is capable of freezing your blood with psychological themes.

Relations.

Frisk manages to make many friends with the monsters in the Underground on the neutral and pacifist routes.

Sans: Sans is a short, big-headed skeleton. He wears an unbuttoned blue hoodie, black shorts with a white stripe down the sides, and pink sneakers. He always has a big smile and only slightly moves the corners of his mouth when he speaks.

It has white pupils that tend to disappear when it speaks in a serious tone. It also has a bright, flashing iris that blinks between blue and yellow depending on the movement it is about to make. When it speaks, it doesn't move its lips because it is a skeleton, which implies that it possesses a kind of telekinesis.

Papyrus: Despite his lazy attitude and bad jokes, Sans admires and cares deeply for his brother Papyrus. Papyrus has a huge obsession with the human house, as he always dreams of being a royal and popular guard. He reads his brother bedtime stories and helped him make his battle suit a few weeks before Frisk fell into the Underground. He also likes to tease him from time to time by telling one of his bad jokes.

Sans is very worried that other people will take advantage of his Papyrus's innocence.

Unlike Sans, Papyrus is a taller and more flexible skeleton.

Toriel: After Chara falls into the Underground, Toriel takes on the role of a mother, caring for them with the same affection and attention she showed her son, Asriel. Later, she decides to do the same for Frisk, and presumably for the other fallen humans as well, since after Frisk tries to fight her, she explains that humans never truly return after leaving, and she prefers to keep them locked up and protected. She describes herself as an excellent surrogate mother, treating Frisk with kindness and affection, and caring deeply for them. She wears a white coat and has the appearance of a kind, humanoid goat.

Relationships. (2)

Asgore: Like Toriel, Asgore acted as Chara's adoptive father, treating them the same way he treated his son Asriel. He appears at the end of the game as the final boss, although in the true ending of the route, Toriel sends him flying while she reunites with everyone else.

Undyne: Frisk speaks to Undyne for the first time during their initial battle encounters. After being chased by Undyne, Frisk collapses from the heat, and since Undyne's body is similar to a fish's, Frisk quickly takes advantage of the situation to give her water. Frisk visits Undyne at Papyrus's house with Papyrus's help, and they become best friends, revealing more of Undyne's mischievous personality and even setting the house on fire in the process. When Undyne finally decides to fight Frisk to regain her honor as a royal knight, she realizes that Frisk is a "weak loser with a big heart," just like Asgore, and decides to befriend them. After the date with Alphys, Frisk begins to fix and improve upon her past mistakes.

Flowey is considered the only villain with malicious intentions. He experiments on Sans using his SAVE ability, but it has no effect because Sans is aware of each reset, implying that Sans has been the only person capable of stopping him, just like Frisk in the Genocide Route.

Alphys: She is portrayed as a short scientist with many social insecurities regarding her love of anime and her admiration for Frisk, spying on him and helping him in any way she can.

Curiosities.

• Frisk holding the umbrella and glass of water with their left hand, implying they are left-handed. This is also supported by the attack animations where the slash curves to the right, indicating they are using their left hand.

• Frisk is 16 years old.

• Frisk is allergic to Temmie, but not to the other furry residents of the Subway.

• Napstablook was the only monster who didn't know Frisk's name until it was mentioned in the true pacifist route.

• Frisk is the only human who survives to the end of any adventure.

Legend.

"Long ago, two races ruled the earth: HUMANS and MONSTERS. One day, a war broke out between the two races. After a long battle, the humans were victorious. They sealed the monsters underground with a magic spell."

Many years later...
