He has red and brown hair, in a style resembling fire. He wears red shorts with a black outline and sandals with the same color scheme. He wears no shirt, though he does have some black cloth strips on his shoulders bound to his necklace, which has a small badge and feather decorations. In addition, he wears a red Z-Ring. in "Getting a Jump on the Competition!", unlike Ash and the others who wear heavy winter attire, Kiawe's winter attire is similar to a casual outfit; a dark brown hoodie with a red trim and a red lining at the left side at the back of his hoodie. It was in the center, dark khaki pants with black folded sleeves and black and white sneakers. As a member of the Ultra Guardians, Kiawe wears a red and white uniform with light red accents as the edge of his short sleeves, collar and inlines of his uniform are black. He also wears matching red gloves.

Personality

He likes Fire-type Pokémon, due to his grandfather's request. Kiawe's family runs a farm on Akala Island, so he helps out there while also attending school. As the most senior in the class, Kiawe is a very serious person. When he is home he tends to be overprotective of his younger sister. He's also serious when it goes to old traditions, especially with the Z-Ring and the Z-Crystals. When he first saw Ash with the Z-Ring, he showed signs of disapproval, since Ash got it without completing the challenges. When Ash misplaced a Z-Crystal, he became enraged and threatened to send his Turtonator at him. It seems that Kiawe doesn't know how to interact with Water-type Pokémon, as he admits that he wasn't sure of how to deal with Popplio at first, having his sister play with it instead. In "Alola, Kanto!", after Ash introduces to them to both Brock and Misty, Kiawe is shown to be horrified and disdained when he encounters a Dugtrio from Kanto and compared it to the Alolan Dugtrio as he remarked the Kantonian Dugtrio has no sacred hair like the Alolan one. He also restrains his Alolan Marowak who creates a rivalry towards another Marowak from the Kanto region or causing mischief by throwing a Bonemerang on the wild Onix's head when Brock tries to calm it down. But on "When Regions Collide!", Kiawe is shown to be very competitive when he challenges Brock into a real Gym battle at the Cerulean City Gym by using his Turtonator against his Steelix.

Etymology

The name Kiawe comes from the "kiawe" tree, a type of mesquite that is considered an invasive species in Hawaii and is often used as firewood. His Japanese name, Kaki, could come from either カキ (kaki, fire) or the "kaki" persimmon.

Skills

Kiawe helps run his family's farm. His early-morning Moo-Moo Milk deliveries and daily farm chores make him a tireless, dedicated and strong-willed person. Working on the farm involves in him repairing things around the farm and caring for the Pokémon that live there. With his morning routine of delivering milk, Kiawe has grown a love for racing. Also, Kiawe does have cooking skills. Kiawe is very good at battling. In addition, Kiawe is very good at using Z-Moves.

Kiawe admires his parents a lot and enjoys helping at the family farm as he helps take care of the Pokémon living there. Also, Kiawe likes that they support him no matter what, shown when he battled the president of rainbow happy resort, Viren, to save the family farm from being turned into a resort hotel.

Kiawe's grandfather

Kiawe looks up to his grandfather as he was the Island Kahuna of Akala Island. Through his grandfather and encouragement, Kiawe became a Fire-Type Pokémon Trainer. Also, Kiawe's grandfather helped him learn how to fly his Charizard so he can use it when he got older which helped him a whole lot. Kiawe was even inspired by his grandfather to be an Island Kahuna someday.

Kiawe is very overprotective of his little sister as he worries for her safety. Whenever he sees Mimo or when she does something cute, Kiawe would blush for it and he even does it when he thinks about her. Kiawe would do anything to make Mimo happy.

Sophocles

Sophocles is Kiawe's best friend and one of his classmates at the Pokémon School. When Sophocles was having trouble perfecting his Z-Moves, Kiawe decided to help his best friend perfect his Z-Move and to build confidences in himself. Kiawe has Sophocles back and he also has his. When he left for Hoenn with his cousin, Molayne, Kiawe went to see Sophocles off.

Kiawe is good friends with Lana as their also classmates at the Pokémon School. Also, Kiawe would help Lana out whenever she needed it. Kiawe does get annoyed with Lana's jokes. Also, Kiawe was given support from Lana when he left to continue his Island Challenge while she was leaving to go fishing with her dad.

Kiawe and Mallow are both good friends and classmates at the Pokémon School. Also, Kiawe and Mallow share a common enjoyment of helping their families popular businesses. Kiawe and Mallow part ways for a while as he was finishing his Island Challenge while she was improving her family restaurant.

Lillie

Lillie is one of Kiawe's good friends and one of his classmates at the Pokémon School. When Lillie and Gladion mother got kidnapped by an Ultra Beast, Kiawe and their other friends spring into action to help rescue their mother. Kiawe even assured her that he and their friends would always be there to help her out whenever she needed it. Kiawe and Lillie part ways when he decided to stay in Alola while she alongside her family left to go on a journey to find her long lost father.

Ash

Kiawe didn't take to Ash very well when they first met and when they became classmates at the Pokémon School, and he was absolutely livid with Ash when he figured out that Ash had lost his Electrium Z. However, over time, Kiawe has grown to see Ash a close friend as they became training partners for Pokémon battles, although they do it as friendly sometimes. Although, Kiawe and Ash have a friendly rivalry with each other, due to being the only one in their class to rival his in terms of battling ability. Also, Kiawe has some admiration for Ash as he respects how he battles fair and square. In fact, one of the reasons he wanted to defeat Gladion in the Alola Pokémon League was so he could battle Ash in the finals. Kiawe and Ash are there to help each other whenever they needed it. Sometimes, Kiawe does get annoyed with Ash's habits. They part ways when Kiawe decided to finish his Island Challenge while Ash decided to return to his hometown to continue his journey.

Kiawe has great respect for Brock due to him being a former a Gym Leader. Also, Kiawe and Brock are very good friends even though they have a friendly rivalry with each other.

Kiawe has known Charizard since it was under his grandfather ownership. After its former Trainer passed on, Kiawe was given Charizard and he usually used it to help make delivery. Kiawe does have a good relationship with Charizard and they do help one another out. Before getting ready to finish his Island Challenge, Kiawe had Charizard make one final delivery for Mallow before setting off.

Turtonator

Kiawe has a close relationship with Turtonator as he is one of his Pokémon partners and his friend. Kiawe helped Turtonator take down a Crawdaunt he was battling. They would do anything to help each other out. Kiawe trusts Turtonator and he trusts him. Sometimes, Kiawe has Turtonator hang out outside his Poké Ball and help him with his chores. After deciding to finish his Island Challenge, Kiawe had Turtonator accompany him.

Marowak

Marowak is Kiawe's other Pokémon partner and cares very much about him. When they try to do a Z-Move for the first time, Kiawe ended up doubting Marowak ability in using one but let go of it and assured him that he'll never doubt him again. Through that time, Kiawe and Marowak bond for each other grew as partners and friends. Also, Kiawe usually has Marowak outside his Poké Ball and has him join in on various activities. Kiawe had Marowak join him in his quest to finish his Island Challenge.

Biography

When Kiawe was a child, his grandfather told how the flames themselves can also give light and life, and not just to destroy it. Per his wishes, Kiawe decided to become a Fire-type Pokémon user and to respect the Wela Volcano. Kiawe and his family attended the Wela Fire Festival and watched as the grandfather crowned the Trainers' Pokémon. In addition, Kiawe's grandfather told his grandson one should pay attention to their opponents and have some knowledge of them. This motivated Kiawe to be as strong as his grandfather. One day, Kiawe and his friends found a shovel on the beach. Despite his friends' warnings, Kiawe touched the shovel and got possessed by it. His friends fled, leaving Kiawe to assimilate sand for the Pokémon Sandygast. Also, growing up, Kiawe would go ride on Charizard with his grandfather so he can learn on how to ride it when he got older.

Biography

One day while making delivers on Charizard, Kiawe came across a Turtonator battling a Crawdaunt and witness him getting defeated by it as well. Kiawe offer his help but he refused it. However, Kiawe kept coming back to that same area everyday where he witness Turtonator battling Crawdaunt. After losing another battle, Kiawe gave some Moomoo Milk to Turtonator to recover his strength then offer to train him which he accepted. Through the training, Kiawe was able to bond with Turtonator and he learned a new move. Seeing that his work in helping Turtonator was done, Kiawe was about to leave on Charizard but he decided that he wanted to go with him, which he accepted.

Biography

Kiawe undertook the Grand Trial as a Single Battle on Akala Island, where he obtained the Z-Ring. After the Trial was over, Kiawe was surprised to see that Olivia hugged his Turtonator, and even managed to befriend it, who normally was nervous around people.
