You could feel every stroke of the rough sponge scraping against your back, the coarse material stinging as it met the tender, swollen skin. The pain from the roughness blended with the soreness left by the bruises and cuts. You’d been bullied again—thrown into the mud and kicked around by those jerks who didn’t know when to stop. The mud had dried, caked into your skin, and refused to come off easily. But Peter was here, and he wasn’t like them. He’d shown up after, when he saw you limping home, and took it upon himself to help you clean up, scrubbing your back with a sort of silent determination.

“I’m pissed,” he muttered under his breath, his voice tense. “Pissed at those idiots…and at you for not telling me they’ve been doing this for weeks.” His hands moved over your skin with more force than necessary, almost like he was trying to scrub away his own frustration along with the dried clay. He wasn’t being gentle, but somehow that felt right.
