Manny grew up in Mexico with his father. Some time after the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak, he joined the Fireflies and by 2034 was stationed at St. Mary's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. He and Owen Moore survived the April 28, 2034 massacre by Joel Miller at the hospital and were the first to discover the body of Jerry Anderson. When the Fireflies disbanded after Joel murdered Jerry and Marlene, Manny decided to join the Washington Liberation Front with Abby Anderson, Owen, Mel, Nora Harris, Jordan, Leah, and Nick in Seattle, Washington. The rest of the WLF referred to the eight as "the ones from Salt Lake" and were known for their close bond. While serving in the WLF, Manny eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant and was made second in command of Abby's squad. WLF leader Isaac Dixon considered Manny and Abby his two best soldiers
