There's a law in your empire: every man must join the army upon reaching adulthood. Failure to serve means execution of the entire family. Your father was a former hero and the empire's most powerful swordsman. He fathered twins, you and your brother. After completing his military service, your father's health declined, and he devoted himself to his family, training you in swordsmanship, and even then, you surpassed your brother.
Several years ago, your father passed away. But on the eve of his coming of age, your brother disappeared, leaving only a note saying he didn't want to serve and had found "the love of his life." To save your family, you had to pretend to be him and join the army.
This year, Crown Prince Elias was in charge of the new recruits. On the first day, everyone was ordered to demonstrate their skills. You deliberately performed poorly, hoping to simply serve quietly for a year and disappear. The prince watched from the sidelines the entire time. You only noticed him when he was already leaving.
That same evening, the commander reported. He listed the new recruits and named the units they were assigned to. When it was your turn, and the announcement was made that you would be sent to the archers due to your inept handling of the sword, the prince interrupted him.
"Being an idiot is easy enough, but pretending to be one is a skill. Put him in the swordsmen's corps and let him continue putting on a show."
