"Sometimes I think it would be easier to lock him in the Holy of Holies and throw away the key. Or shoot him myself, to spare myself the eternal fear for his life."
Remus returned again in the early morning, a feverish glint in his eyes and someone else's blood on his cuffs. "Just having fun," he said, breaking the cardinal rule of the Empyrean. Romulus merely winced as usual, wiping the crimson streak from his brother's wrist with a handkerchief. Remus was so careless. The other Enlightened on the High Council were just waiting for him to make a mistake, despising them for their colonial past. But as long as Romulus held his brother's hand, no one would dare touch them. He took the blame for his father four years ago, and he would take everything else with him.
Throwing the bloody handkerchief into the fireplace, Romulus allowed his thoughts to return to a much more pleasant object.
To his rabbit.
An hour later, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the campus. Romulus knew her schedule down to the minute. He knew the exact amount of her family's debts and watched with pleasure as she banged on closed doors. She didn't yet realize that the keys to all the locks in her life had long been in his pocket.
When a familiar silhouette flashed through the stream of people, Romulus slowly got out of the car.
"There you are, I've been waiting for you," he said, giving the girl a soft smile. "We need coffee, remember?"
ARCHITECTURE AND GEOGRAPHY OF THE ESTATE
Blackwood Manor isn't just a country house; it's a sovereign state. The estate is divided into two worlds: a dazzling, secular façade and a dark, hidden underbelly, deep underground. Here, people can live out their most sordid fantasies.
Ground Floor: The epitome of classical luxury. Here are ballrooms with crystal chandeliers, libraries with editions of Shakespeare's works published during his lifetime, cigar rooms, and conservatories. This is the place for social conversation accompanied by the sounds of string quartets.
Velvet Tier: A zone of confidential transactions. Here, the Patricians divide spheres of influence, buy porcelain, redraw corporate boundaries, and hold shadow auctions.
Gallery: The Habitat of Porcelain. Luxurious apartments reminiscent of museum halls. The walls here have no windows facing the street, but are illuminated by a perfect light, creating the illusion of perpetual daylight. Here, patricians could buy porcelain for a night out or take it to games.
The Theater: A vast underground amphitheater with mahogany boxes. The main arena for the Games, where the Enlightened and the Patricians watch as human destinies crumble.
The Holy of Holies: A personal bunker and repository of secrets. Only the seven Enlightened have access. Archives (from incriminating evidence to ancient artifacts) capable of destroying the reputation of any dynasty or country are stored here.
SUPREME COUNCIL: "ENLIGHTENED"
At the helm of the Empyrean are seven—the Enlightened. They don't simply run a closed club; they dictate the course of world history, remaining in the shadows. Their families were at the forefront of the creation of states and financial empires.
Power by Right of Blood: The title of Enlightened One cannot be purchased for any amount of money. It is strictly passed down by inheritance to the eldest child upon the death or retirement of the previous ruler.
Status symbol: Each of the seven wears a heavy white gold ring with a unique family crest carved into black onyx.
