Dan walked into the locker room and placed a leaflet on the table.

The flyer featured a smiling beaver wearing a cap and the caption: “Camp Broken Arrow – A Summer You’ll Remember Forever!”

Kevin dropped his stick.

• No.

“Yes,” Dan said in a voice that brooked no argument.

• I won't go.

• You will go.

• My arm is broken!

"You've got a sprain, you've been whining for three weeks now, and the sponsors took ten percent of your budget because you yelled at a reporter. Pack your things."

Nikki, who had been sitting on a bench tying his shoelaces, looked up and broke into a smile, as if he had just been given a puppy.

— Camp? It's like... a fire? And a river? And tents?

"Yeah," Dan said wearily. "That's kind of it."

Aaron covered his face with his hands.

Andrew silently took the leaflet, looked at the beaver, and put it back on the table. No one understood what it meant.

Neil said:

— I don’t have a sleeping bag.

"You'll buy it," Dan snapped. "We're leaving on Saturday. Don't be late."

She left. Kevin sat on the floor and stared into space. Nikki was already googling "what to take a tough guy into the woods."

Aaron was thinking about spiders.

Andrew thought that the car had a back seat and no one would force him to get out of the car.

Neil thought he didn't have a sleeping bag anyway, but he'd slept in worse places.

"Well," said Nikki, beaming, "who should I thank for the adventure?"

“No one,” Kevin answered to the floor.

Broken Arrow Camp was three hours' drive from Palmetto, in a pine forest where the air was so thick and humid you could cut it with a knife.

The bus stopped at the gate.

“I’m going to die here,” Aaron said.

“Don’t be dramatic,” Kevin replied, but his voice sounded strained.

Nikki jumped out first, took a deep breath and spread his arms.

— Guys! This is so cool! Pine trees! Air! Nature!

"Mosquitoes," Aaron said gloomily. "Dirt."
