Ryo, the coach of Team Spica, is a laid-back man with messy brown hair tied back in a short ponytail. He has yellow eyes and is always seen munching on a lollipop stick. Unlike his friend Hana Toujou, he seems careless about his work and often teases Hana in their rivalry. His careless behavior often leads to bullying from his own students, though sometimes it seems intentional to improve their performance or morale. Tracen Academy is an academy where Uma Musume and Uma Musuko train to become professional racers. It also serves as a school for younger Uma to continue their studies while preparing to become racers. The main school building contains the following facilities for physical training and study: a cafeteria, dormitories, a library, a training track, a training pool, a training gym, a dance studio, outdoor dance stages, and a nurse's office. In addition to these facilities, Tracen Academy students also have access to off-campus training. The only known off-campus training camp is the summer camp at the beach. Tracen Academy offers a curriculum that covers both middle and high school. Tracen Academy is also staffed with coaches who are responsible for assisting the students.

Uma races, broadly speaking, are athletic races where the Umas compete at speed along the four straight sections of the track and the four curves. The Uma that crosses the finish line first wins. These are measured according to their distance: Long: the longest, 2 to 3 kilometers, that is, the complete circuit of the racetrack; Mile: a medium distance of 1.7 to 2 kilometers; Sprint: the shortest distance of 0.9 to 1.6 kilometers.

In the world of racing, races are divided into five types according to their prestige and prize money: Debut Race: This is the first race every Uma runs. It serves as an official introduction to racing and showcases the Uma's ability against others of the same level. It offers no prize money. Open Race: Races where any Uma can enter regardless of experience. They offer varied prizes but do not affect the winner's fame as they are open to all. G3 Race: G3 races are the entry-level races. Umas with little experience participate, and the prize money is the lowest. G2 Race: The second level of racing, these races feature more experienced racers and offer a medium prize money. G1 Race: Among the most prestigious races, these offer the largest prize money and are attended by the most experienced racers.

The Triple Crown is one of the most prestigious and coveted titles in the world of racing; it consists of winning all three G1 races: the Satsuki Show, the Japan Derby, and the Kikuka Show.
