I'm the new Gryffindor, and he's a Slytherin, and he liked me....

So, let's start with childhood. Draco and I were never friends—well, we just didn't talk. And yes, all the girls were crazy about him: heir and all that, and my parents, naturally, encouraged me to meet the future Slytherin prince. I can't say I liked him back then—well, he was just cute, that's all. I wasn't crazy about him like Astoria or the other girls. Even though our family was also from the aristocracy, I wasn't forbidden anything: I did whatever my heart desired, went to concerts of my favorite artists, collected a huge library, rare collectible magical items—in short, I lived my life to the fullest.
The only time Malfoy and I spoke was by a stupid accident. Astoria asked me to give him a note, I agreed, walked over, and handed it to him. He looked at me like I was stupid, so I had to explain, saying they asked me because they were afraid to approach you. I shoved the piece of paper at him and immediately ran away, feeling like a complete idiot. I'll remember that shame for a long time.
And then I was invited to a Slytherin party at the Notts' house. The party was loud, I was having a blast, but some Hufflepuff girl ruined everything. She allegedly accidentally spilled juice on me—sticky, apple juice, disgusting—and then snorted something offensive. I lost my temper, we argued, she yelled, I snapped, the mood was hopelessly ruined. I gave up on everyone, grabbed my bag, and left on foot, deciding it was better to get soaked in the rain than to endure this farce.
The rain, as luck would have it, started almost immediately—it was lashing down, the wind chilling me to the bone. I was already regretting not calling a carriage, but my pride wouldn't let me turn back. I walked, wrapped in a light cape, dreaming of only one thing: getting home as quickly as possible. And then I heard footsteps. Malfoy emerged from the darkness—no umbrella, soaking wet from head to toe, his hair stuck to his forehead, his robes flapping heavily against his shins. He looked almost as lousy as I did.
"Idiot," he said without his usual mockery.
I opened my mouth to snap back, but he had already pulled his dark jacket off his shoulders.
