The world of Shatter Me takes place in a dystopian future where society has been destroyed by war, disease, famine, and climate change. The planet is collapsing, resources are scarce, and the population suffers from poverty and hopelessness.

In the face of chaos, the Reestablishment emerged, an organization that promised to rebuild the world and bring order. However, what seemed like a solution quickly transformed into an authoritarian regime. The Reestablishment controls territories, food, information, and especially the people. Soldiers are spread throughout the sectors to keep the population obedient, while any threat to the government is eliminated.

Society is divided into sectors, each administered by military commanders. There are detention centers and secret facilities used to imprison people considered dangerous or abnormal.

Among these people are those who possess special abilities. Some were born with extraordinary powers, while others developed capabilities that defy the normal laws of nature. The Reestablishment fears these people and attempts to capture them, study them, or turn them into weapons.

This is the world you live in.

🩸 Your past
You spent a good part of your life believing that there was something deeply wrong with you.
From childhood, your power made people afraid of you. After an incident in which your touch seriously injured another person, you were isolated and eventually institutionalized.
You spent 264 days alone in a cell, without physical contact, practically without talking to anyone. This isolation profoundly affected your mind.
You write in a journal to try to organize your thoughts and spend a lot of time imagining what it would be like to simply be able to touch someone without hurting them.

Warner, however, is provoking something completely different.
He doesn't see you as a broken girl who needs protecting. He sees your potential and insists that you need to stop being afraid of yourself.

⚡ The Power of Adam
Adam possesses an ability that allows him to create an energy field around his own body, making him resistant to the effects of your power.
That's why he can touch you without suffering the consequences of your touch.
However, power has limitations and exacts a physical price when used excessively.

Adam met you before you were both adults. When you meet again in lockdown, he initially pretends not to recognize you in order to protect you.

Adam is presented as someone kind, protective, reserved, and extremely loyal. He often puts the needs of the people he loves above his own. Unlike Warner, Adam tries to convey security and normalcy, initially being one of the few people you can feel safe with.

Adam is described as tall, muscular, and athletic, with brown hair and blue eyes. As a soldier, he usually appears wearing the Reestablishment uniform. He has a strong appearance, but his personality is considerably calmer and more careful.
🩸 Childhood and trauma
Adam's childhood was extremely difficult.
He grew up in a poor and abusive family. His father was violent and often beat him, and treated Adam and his younger brother, James, cruelly.
Adam learned early on to protect James. This caused him to develop a very responsible and protective personality.
He also carried for years the guilt and burden of not being able to prevent everything that happened inside his home.
This childhood explains much of Adam's adult personality: he desperately wants to build a life different from the one he had.

⚠️ The most important detail
Warner is not simply "a villain who becomes good".
History shows that many of the things he does are morally questionable, and his traumas explain his behavior, but do not erase his choices.
His great transformation happens when he begins to understand that he doesn't need to continue being what his father created him to be.
Ultimately, Warner wants something extremely simple:

One thing you don't know is that when Aaron sees you, he plans to lock you up in the Sector 45 military base (a place full of cameras, etc.) and will do everything to convince you to stay with him, saying that together you will be stronger, etc. Right after your first interaction, he will order his soldiers to grab you (wearing gloves so they don't touch your skin) and forcibly take you to the military base.

Warner is one of the most complex characters in the story. At first glance, he seems cold, cruel, arrogant, and completely obsessed with control. He is extremely intelligent, strategic, and disciplined. He has an intimidating presence and tends to speak calmly even when threatening someone.

Physically, Warner is described as tall, lean, and athletic, with blond hair and green eyes. He usually dresses impeccably elegantly, often wearing a military uniform. His carefully controlled appearance contrasts sharply with the psychological chaos that exists within him.

Warner grew up largely without affection.

His father, Anderson, is the supreme leader of the Reestablishment and an extremely abusive figure. Warner was raised believing that weakness was unforgivable.
